Hmm well I am not sure what to do then. I was going to use duplicolor metalcast smoke color on the headlight ring, and gauge rings. It is supposed to look anodized. I wonder if it would hold up on the shocks. I guess if I were going to use it anyway, it cant hurt to try. I like the look of "black chrome". I know its not the real thing, but I think it would go with my scheme well.

My other dilema with chrome would be my exhaust. I have a 2 into 1 chrome exhaust. I was thinking of wrapping it in black exhaust wrap for a temporary fix. I am in the same boat as the wheels. The chrome is still nice on it, so I wouldnt want to strip it for paint.

That's going to be a sharp looking bike!
But with the clipons and rearsets, she's begging for a cafe style seat.
I've seen this while poking around fleabay:

You could easily make one yourself though.

Give your paint (the duplicolor metal cast smoke...dude, that sounds cool) a try; how do you know you're not on to something. You don't have anything to lose, and so far you've hit everything out of the park.

I know what you mean about the "good chrome"; feel sorta bad about dorkin' it up. Maybe get some different end-cans and modify them, put 'em on, and wrap the header tubes like you said.

Keep us posted with pics!!! ...I'm so needy...

Well its been a while, but I have made a lot of progress.
I tried the metal cast paint and I love it. Here is what it looks like on my gauge covers.

I plan on doing everything in it. The headlight ring, grab bar, clip-ons, front fender, ect.. I am going to try it on the shocks and see how it holds up. I dont know how it will take to the springs flexing, but we will see!
Here are some pics of where I am at. Just buttoning up the wiring, still have to make the shift linkage, and mount the rear brake light switch. I also have to clean up a lot of parts and paint them. I reorganized all the electrical parts and mounted them in front of and behind the battery.
I do have a issue with my exhaust. Where I have the rear sets mounted, my 2 into 1 is in the way of my brake pedal when pressed. I have a set off the CSR that was just down tubes with short straight pipes on the end. I think I will chop them up and make my own 2 into 1 that will work. Should be interesting! This way I wont feel bad about painting them black!
Anyway, heres the pics!

Oh yeah i forgot to add my other find. I bought a set of Z1 wheels to put on her from a fellow Kz'r.
Here are some pics. They need a little TLC, but will look great on the bike.

Oh-ho yeah!
LOVE the silver!

The wheels are gonna be great. BTW, they can't be Z-1 wheels b/c Z-1 wheels were all spokes; Z-1s were 73 - 75 and only came with spokes. They probably are KZ wheels from 'whatever bike'; I'm sure that since they're a double disc up front and the rear looks like an 18" some guru around here can tell you "...oh, those are off a ###...".
At any rate: wonderful work!!! Keep it comin'! ...I'm still needy!

Well buttoned everything up and took her for a test rider around the parking lot. She runs real nice. My first try didnt go that well. I couldnt get it to idle without the choke on.
I found out my one carb boot was leaking a little, and just needed to be tightened, and I went ahead and tore down the carbs completely and cleaned them out. Stuck the bodies in the parts washer for a hour, and blew everything out with air. She purrs like a kitten now! Loud as hell with my shorty pipes though! I cant use my 2-1 because of where I mounted my rear sets. I think she is a little lean still, I need to rejet after I get everything done.
I will post some more pics tonight.
Thanks for the compliments,
Jay

hmm I dont know about the wheels. Doesnt really matter to me, as long as they work!
Here is some pics of how the shocks came out. Also a pic of my linkage. You can see my problem with the kick stand now. I fabbed it with out it on, and now I realize when up, its in my way. Not sure what i will do yet. I might just cut it off and buy a bolt on one for the front.

couldnt you flip the part on the shifter shaft so the linkage is up top? If im not mistaken this will change your shift pattern as well in the process...for example say its one down 5 up now it would be one up 5 down...basicly a race bike shift pattern. If it doesnt reverse it it will work the same way as before. May have to adjust the length of the shift rod but this is something to consider before cutting that nicely painted frame up.

It actually mechanically works fine the way it is. I guess I was kinda vague, the end of the stand itself is in the way of the shifter when it is in the up position. So I dont know if I have a option. Unless I make my own arm, and put some kind of crazy bend in it so it is under the bike more in the up position. I am not sure what I am going to do yet. For now I put a pin through it just so I can take some test rides. It would work better and look cleaner if I did have it relocated.

I also painted the front fender, rear sets, headlight rim, and the rest of the parts for the gauges the silver color. I will try to get some pics up tomorrow of them all assembled.
I have a very cool idea for the pipes too. Someone who posted earlier mentioned a Buell style muffler. I have a idea to make a similar style. I will will give more details when I figure them out myself!
