New Member from Canada - 1985 GPZ 550

Good Day All!
A bit intimidating coming on a forum knowing so little about bikes with all the knowledgeable people here. However, I am super excited for this GPZ I picked up in the fall. It's not the nicest, but it's pretty nice compared to my old 82 GPZ 550 that I rode for years before someone kicked it over on the street and basically killed. Anyway, here is Riley's dumb adventures for anyone that wants to read and I hope I don't get too many, "you're an idiot" comments. Typical story of me having an 82' GPZ from around 1998 until 2012, then marriage, kids, blah, blah, blah. Just very happy to get a bike again. I bought it out of province as can been seen in the photos, the trailer that I brought it home on. Finally had the inspection done and it failed on tires (which I knew about as the old ones are weather cracked) and the flasher doesn't work. Signal lights turn on, but it won't flash. However, I do have one issue that developed since bringing it home. That trailer was waaaaaaaay too rough and I am not pleased about that but that was only the start of things where I should have known better last Fall. As I was planning on waiting until Spring to get the bike inspected, I turned the fuel to 'Off" or what I thought was off because the petcock is rusted just enough to not really be able to tell what it says. Later that day, there is fuel leaking on the trailer around where the center stand would mount. Doing some reading, I found it's vacuum operated, so I actually turned it to prime. Damn it. I put it back to on, unloaded the bike from the trailer and rolled it by where I am going to store it. About a week later, I figure I will start it, just to hear it run again since buying it, get the battery charger as the old battery is dead. It spins over for a couple seconds and quits. I get the charger reset and crank the engine. After a couple rotations (or so it seems like a couple) fuel spits out between the head and the block....Obviously I stopped cranking it. I removed the fuel tank and took all the spark plugs out. Cranking it again, fuel spits out the spark plug hole and I feel like the worlds largest moron for not having taken the plugs out first knowing it was leaking fuel. Anyway, it's October. I empty the fuel tank and fuel bowls and put the bike in storage until I am ready to deal with it in Spring (lines for fuel plugged and tank in the garage inside a tote with moisture absorbent gel).
Fast forward to Spring. New battery, get the bike out, reassemble and add some fuel. It fires right up. So sign of a leak from the head gasket. Take it for it's inspection and it is leaking again with the petcock on run (or just on?). Last fall it didn't leak fuel with the fuel lines off until I turned it to prime, then it would flow, so I am assuming the petcock is functioning. Anyway, it's still leaking fuel so I am guessing it will need new needles and seats in the carb. Maybe even floats? If anyone could link me to a proper carb kit, that would be so appreciated as I am not 100% sure if what I find online will fit the GPZ. Once I have those, I will rebuild the carbs (and if anyone knows where to find a manual online, or has tips, that would be sooooo appreciated as well). Later this month it's booked for tires and I'll have them swap the signal light relay, then with it not leaking fuel, I will be so happy to be out on a bike again. I am fine with most mechanics. It just turns out my brain likes to shut off sometimes and I am frankly embarrassed about that. Anyway, glad to be here. I would appreciate any help people are willing to give. Thanks!!!

Welcome to our version of "fun" !  There are many knowledgeable and experienced KZ nuts here, and we'll all help you when you ask.  Read Nessism's post "New owner things to know" for some good advice.
And remember, questions aren't dumb if they avoid dumb mistakes cuz you didn't ask!  And most of us have the t-shirt for that...
