Looks like it is an 1981 year either a “J”, “M1”, or “K1” 1000. From what I know the M1 (CSR) had a cable drive tachometer, and the J1, and LTD (K1) had electronic tach. So does the head have a hole for the tach cable or is is a solid undrilled casting boss.

Look at the frame VIN located on the main steering stem and at the 7th letter...if it is a J, then J model, if M, then an M model, and if a K, then you have a K model.  The motors for all the 998cc bikes all used J series engines.

I do not have the motorcycle in front of me but I looked at the title in the 7th letter was K. Is there anything specific about the K motor? Is there anything I should know about this specific year? Thank you very much

K would be the LTD version. Mag wheels vs spoked on the J and M1. It should have an electronic tach, no cable.

Also, the K has an electronic speedometer rather than cable drive.

K and M had the least interesting camshafts, and less power than the other models.

Frame and engine numbers are also available here at KZR. www.kzrider.com/filebase?task=download.s...id=1178&catid=64&m=0

You can also download a factory service manual for free here.  www.kzrider.com/modules/ServiceManuals/K...Service%20Manual.pdf

The J series motors dropped into the M and K models are identical (except for the electronic tachometer). Whereas the J series motors for the J model had differences in timing and in jets & needles for the carbs.  It will benefit you to get either a hardcopy of the shop manual (Kawasaki part number 99924-1026-01, or -02, or -03) OR I think there is a free download of that manual under the Articles tab above.
