Hello everyone. Just making my introduction, as I'm sure I'll be looking to tap some of the group knowledge around here in the coming months.

After a good bit of research, I bought a 1978 KZ650 from my wife's friend over the weekend. 9k miles, been in storage a while. It runs, but looks and sounds like it could use a good breakdown and rebuild (carbs leaking, tough to start, some corrosion and paint fade).

Anyway, looking forward to a couple months of hard work and the payoff at the end.

Welcome to the site.
When these bikes sit unused for years, they usually need a bit of work, but it's not too bad. You're right on target with the carbs, they're probably gunked up with gas that's turned to varnish. The gas tank and fuel petcock may need cleaning too. Change the engine oil. Look for cracks in the rubber boots clamped to the carbs. Check the tires for serious sidewall cracks. If you have a manual, it'll show you where to oil and grease the bike to get the parts moving smoothly again.
