Shouldn't a drop in voltage be expected as the load drops? I.e. the batt becomes fully charged and using low beam.

As long as the batt remains above 12v after a run wouldn't that be normal?

The regulator is purely trying to maintain the average voltage. on the system. That means it will let all of the alternator power pass through as long as the system voltage does not get above 14.2 ~ 14.5v. As the battery gets charged, it will use less current, but will still be held at the 14.2~14.5 volt range. But that's ok. It will barely be taking any current.

The failure mode on the old reg/recs is that it will start to reduce the output even when the voltage is below 14.2 ~ 14.5v. The output will slowly get lower and lower. Eventually the output will be below 12v. This means you would be running purely on battery, after awhile, and can end up with a totally dead battery. A battery needs about 12.9v to 13v just to break even and maintain charge.

I'm sending this R/R back. Coming home it was reading barely above 12V,

I don't care if it is the R/R malfunctioning but it has failed all the static and bench tests i can find. The seller has not been helpful at all and I know they have more available.

i am starting to look for a stator but haven't settles on one yet.

Have you tried your stock one?

I wouldn't expect anything different from it, Besides i spliced the connector onto the new loom so I wouldn't have another wiring mishap.

How much do you want for it? I wouldn't mind having another.

One question though: did you hook it up wrong and possibly fry it?

Then how do you know it's bad?

You can have it for shipping if the seller doesn't want it back.

Trying to decide if i caused damage by hooking it up wrong for a short while might have caused damage to it has been half of what this thread has been about. If I did I'm past caring since the seller hasn't been at all helpful about helping me determine that. I wold have preferred an honest answer of "I don't know how you can test it" to the "It came from a working vehicle." and other retarded responses.

They obviously haven't been testing them before they list them so how are they to say they couldn't have possibly sent me a bad one.

I DON'T!

No one can tell me of a definitive way to determine if it is.

I've been given the impression that the SH775 is the best remedy for all that ails the KZ series when it comes to charging issues short of having a bad stator. Sounds good, I might have a bad stator but i wouldn't mind having a better than original R/R too. I would just like to have the chance to use one that I know is good and then move on to getting the stator if needed.

I got a bad one, put the stock KZ 1000 back in and that's what I'm running today.

If your stator is putting out 75VAC at 5000 rpm it seems strange that you are not getting any charging. I would expect something, anything. 13 volts or a little more.

Exactly, I've filed a return request and said i'd take an exchange.

I also found a used stator that is within resistance specs. I'll swap that in as well.

Resistance checks are another false indicator, unless the resistance is out of spec. Those two weak stators I had both checked at the edge of the service limit, and my brand new Rick's stator did too.
