I'm going to start with just springs. If I want to go any further I'm going to source a set of spare forks or damper rods first.

I was just finishing up modifying a set of ZRX shocks and found a bad bladder, so I'm trying to source one of those now.

If you go with springs and THEN decided you wanted to add the emulators, you could run into problems, because the emulator and adapter stack will put too much preload on the springs. shorter length springs require longer spacers for this very reason.

While I don't have the mad fab skills Ted has, this is what i have in mind at this time.
Ted has offered to work on the pipe hanger. Thanks so much Ted.
The bike is geared rather low.I would like to gear it taller. In doing this, i will likely go to a 520 chain.
Seat will become a Corbin Gunslinger seat.. The bike has no passanger pegs nor will it ever take a passanger.
Clip on might be in the future. I am not a fan of such an upright seating position.
Ted left the obtion of a dampner. i will see what is possible.
Rear shocks need to be dialed in.

Mostly I will be putting lots of miles on it.

Let me introduce myself. I am the very lucky new owner of Ted's build!
As Ted mentioned I took the bike on a 300 mile shakedown ride.
(wanted to do 400 miles. However had to stop and talk about the bike more than i would have thought.)
The bike pulls from the bottom all the way to 6K. Power is smooth and linear. I didn't take it past 6K yet.
Clutch slipped a little. Probablly from not being used for so long. This got better with riding later on.
Rear shocks are still really firm. I loosened the preload. We'll see.
Front end felt just fine without really pushing the bike hard.
I used to own a 1979 MK II. This bike has much more grunt and without a doubt feels more nimble.. The front brakes are "RIGHT NOW" with great feel..
I was a little bit reserved as the tires are quite old. However the bike was willing to go whereever I wanted it to without no evil tendencies.
The carbs seem dialled in with no hesitation or stumbling..
All in all this bike reflects the pride and attention to detail that Ted put in the build. I have a short list of mods I am planning as any owner would to make a bike his own.
I feel proud and fortunate to now be the owner of such a wonderful bike..
Ted, what a great bike.

Putting some bits together today;
The 'lighty up' bit. With the original KZ bracket,(cut extended and powder coated by my own fair hand!)

The rear 'lighty up bit with all the bits

YSS shocks looking great (I need to find the top mount nuts though .As with a lot of the bits, theyre in a box somewhere!!

I was looking at the front mudguard and Im not feeling very excited about this ZXR thing. Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative? ( I like the look of the ZRX ones but they arent cheap) Something cheap and cheerful.

I apologize for the shameless plug here, but I'll have a nice set of shocks from a ZRX1100 for sale very shortly.

Im a bigger guy and these 30 + year old shocks are trash. I know they are pretty bad to begin with. Not trying to burn corners but will a ZRX shock fit up ? I had one and they looked close but never measured to see... Or at least anyone know if someone still makes reproduction factory ones. Someone removed the factory air shocks from mine and just put KZ900/1000 rear shocks on it.

I've done a few suspension swaps. I can tell you first hand to research, research, and do more research before handing over cash for the parts.

Later, Doug

I've been scoping this out for a while. I purposefully went with the 18" rims to maintain ride hight, this keeps me from having to Mickey mouse a suspension riser solution and keep the set of ZRX rear shocks I bought for it. Also the front fork width is just about dead nuts the same width as the Gixxr forks, so the front wheel should clear. The stock width for these rims is rear 150/70 (4") and front 110/80. If I have to change the rear swing arm, I think I'd go with a ZRX one.

Wow great deal on a great bike. Here is my 82 GPz750R1, turned it into an ELR clone. Used the swingarm and shocks off a 1999 ZRX1100. Swapped a warmed up 82 GPz1100 engine into it also. The thing is an absolute blast to ride. Handles like the 750 but has over 100 HP, weighs 420 pounds and is wicked fast. If you got any ?? let me know.

tappat wrote: BlackBeard said the same thing about modifying it, What I'm trying to accomplish is to have the back end of the bike sit up higher and have the ability to place a wider back tire on the bike. is this possible with stock parts?

hard to go much over a 140/150 in the stock arm.
zrx shocks like on the black and gold bike will raise the ass end.
the front forks can be dropped through the tree's to lower it.
but the right way would be to shorten the fork tubes.
