Where did you see the frame number photo? Didn't notice it in the sale photos. If Mecum's is reporting the engine numbers correctly, then I would question the engine numbers as they report 6 digits after the Z2E...there should only be 5 digits...there is an extra leading '0'.

I was curious if your Z2 has a frame "Horn"  VIN sticker next to stamped VIN ?  I was told by a Z2 owner that they didn't have a sticker?
Nope, no sticker on mine.  My Z2A came in as an import from a returning serviceman from Japan.  I suspect that the Z2 line in Japan did not have VIN frame stickers.

Only North and South American market  bikes had vin stickers.
None of the European 650's/900's/1000's have vin stickers just stamped frame numbers.

Z1000J2 somewhat modified!

My question is did he leave the bike and bolt or did he come back and get arrested?

During my 8 years working in an auto plant, I saw all manner of egregious "repairs" done by the staff there.  Once, the body shop missed some spot welds on a hem flange of about 100 vehicles, which wasn't discovered until the vehicles were finished.  The "authorized" repair was to drill the flange and install a series of heavy-duty rivets, since welding at that point wasn't viable.

A coworker at that time was doing a concourse level restoration on a Shelby GT350, and I joked to him that when these vehicles are being restored 40 years from now, nobody is going to believe that rivets in that flange are "correct".  The Pebble Beach folk are sure to run the owner of that vehicle off the property!

Here's an updated update --?
www.hagerty.com/media/market-trends/hage...ld-at-mecum-auction/
This article seems to conterdicit itself. It says Mecum saw the photo of the vin and accepted it and allowed the auction to happen but then says the owner is going to try to “raise” the numbers. Either there there or not. Mecum could just release the photo of the vin.

In a situation like that they have a choice of bad press or cancel it and hope it goes away. Either way it doesn't look good for them.
