Thanks for the much appreciated info. Is there a web site that can give me step by step instructions how to re-lace a rim for a 1976 KZ900??

If you can't find a suitable site for motorcycles, there's plenty of YouTube videos on bicycle wheel lacing on the topic because bicycles offset the rear depending on the size of the rear hub. The method is the same. I know 'RJ The Bike Guy' has done one.
It looks like a PITA.

Here is one from Park Tool. He gets around to explaining the spokes.

KennyJ:  I would think, just from your picture, that if you take the wheel off the bike you should literally be able to see the amount of off-set shift in the hub.  Can you see that with the wheel off the bike?  Did you do the lacing/truing yourself on this wheel?  If so, you are quite accomplished already and must have a truing stand.  I really can only speak to the KZ-1000 with a rear disc brake.  I know that when I put mine back together I had some issues with the internal spacers after replacing the wheel bearings that I had to sort out by changing things around a bit.  Basically quite a bit of time had passed from tear down to install and I forget the correct sequence for install of spacers etc.  With some head scratching and picture examination it all came back. Broke my own rule about taking pictures as I go along on tear down darn it all!

Looks like I made a mistake when re-lacing the wheel. Will take everything apart and start from scratch as per the video. Will let you know how I make out. Great video by the way and thanks so much for the link..........CHEERS

Yes.....quite a bit of off-set as I measured it this past weekend. Got an awesome video on how to re-lace properly. It's what you learn (after you think you know it all) that really counts !!!

Experience.

As defined by Merriam Webster:
ex·pe·ri·ence | \ ik-ˈspir-ē-ən(t)s
1 : the process of doing and seeing things and of having things happen to you.
2 : skill or knowledge that you get by doing something.
3 : the length of time that you have spent doing something (such as a particular job).

As defined by some crusty old Tech from days gone by:
"Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted."

Interesting slimjim+Z1BEBE.  I would probably modify the definition in #2 by adding "over and over again".  And in #3 adding "and were successful in the end".

Hi Guys.......after many hours of re-lacing the rear hub to a brand new rim, I finally achieved something. Very time consuming to say the least. Got the wheel back on the bike this afternoon and looks fairly straight ( a lot better than the pictures I posted before). I think what happened the first time around is that I put the inner and outer spokes in the wrong positions on the hub which caused the hub to be off-centered to the rim. Very good video by the way and thanks a lot for sending it to me. Still have a bit of adjustments to do with the radial and axial run-out to meet specs but it still looks like winter is going to be here for a while yet in Winnipeg. Hopefully I will get everything done come spring time so I can get the bike safety certified and get her back on the road ......Can't wait ! Cheers to all who answered my issues
