Makes sense.

I'm afraid I can confirm that part 13144-1318 is not an 18T sprocket. It's 17T, same as what I had, only more expensive and of no use to me.

Darn. Thanks for letting me know.
So it's a 530? Could you go with a 40T rear to get the final gearing where you want it?

What are the stock sizes for the KZP 1000? I have a 1987 and my sprockets and chains are worn out.

The stock sprocket sizes for the KZ1000-P6 Police 1000 (1987) are 15/41. Ed

Yeah it's 530. I just bought the 42T rear sprocket and was hoping not to have to replace it (PITA). Also, at 42T its already very small. I'd worry about the chain hitting the swingarm going any smaller.

I ordered an 18T sprocket from vortex which may or may not have the 4.5mm boss on it. We'll see. Still haven't found a source for spacers other than Z1E, who will no doubt charge me $14 to ship something that would fit in an envelope...

Just one last question... If I'm going with the stock sprocket sizes what chain should I buy?

According to the parts diagram (see link below) the KZ1000-P6 uses a EK630SZDOX98L chain. So I believe that is a 630 chain with 98 links, but be sure to double check before buying. Buy a high quality o-ring or x-ring chain. Some high quality chain manufacturers are EK; Tsubaki; and D.I.D. Cheap chains not only do not last long, they also can come apart which is dangerous. Ed

I suggest you call the folks at Z1E and ask them about it because you would be changing from a size 630 chain to a size 530 chain. They should be able to give good advice based on their customers' experience with that change. Ed

That would put you at 2.73:1. Which is a lower gearing than the stock 530 setup (17/41) 2.41:1 (but the same as the stock 630 setup (15/41)) . Also that 15T front sprocket is going to be very small (a 15T 530 sprocket is smaller than a 15T 630 sprocket). They say that the tighter the radius around the front sprocket, the more rapid the chain wear.

And the stock 530 chain is 116 links, so you're going to have to remove two links from that 118 link chain.

EDIT: Actually, I'm not really sure how many teeth are on the stock 530 rear sprocket (2002-2005). All I have to go on is online (mis)information. They could have kept the same ratio and used a 46 or 47.

So...Thanks again guys. You were right. I talked to Rob at Z1 and he was super helpful. I was going to go with 18/49 on the 530 chain but they were out of the 18 tooth front sprocket like some of you said. He though maybe a 16/44 but said he didn't like to have such a small sprocket on the front.

We ended up going with a 630 chain with 15/42 and 98 link chain. He said it will put my revs from 4000 to 3900 but I don't usually ride that fast anyway.

Thanks again fo all of your help and expertise guys.
