Stator, should I replace
19 Sep 2006 18:07
I have identified that my charging system is not working. I have checked the volts at the two yellow wires coming from the stator and I get zero. I have 12.7 volts at the battery which will raise at 4000 RPM. I use the same setting on my meter and unplug the yellow wires I mentioned above check acroos the two and get 0. Should I replace this thing?

Zero? Maybe you should check your wiring further first. Then check the stator and rotor - make sure there *is* one!...I get zero.... Should I replace this thing?

Yes there is one
Wires look good and windings have good isulation. Still nothing across the two wires. Am I checking this correctly?

Are You absolutely sure that You don't have a break in one of the yellow stator wires?

I'm checking the wires right outside the rubber seal where they come through. I'll check a second time.

Don't be fooled,Bud...they break on the INSIDE too.It happened to Me,and a few Others that I know of.
In MY case,it wasn't a clean break(barely hanging on) and I was getting low volts because of it,and eventually,My BRAND NEW battery would fizzle out.
Seriously...You might want to remove that cover and have a good look inside.
(Get,or make a replacement gasket ahead of time)

Help me out... You put a multimeter on your battery and at idle you get 12.7 VDC? Then you raise the rpms and get more DC voltage? I don't understand how your reg/rec could raise the voltage if there is no AC voltage coming off your stator. I am not sure how a two wire set up works... how are you making the measurement for AC on those yellow wires?

I checked the internal wire and they are all fine. I get the feeling maybe I'm doing something wrong from your comments. There should be at least some power even when first starting correct? Thismorning I get nothing cold or warm.

How come you were checking your charging system? What problems are you having that led you to this?

The battery DC lowers when idling and even less at 4000RPM. I believe if the charging system is working it should go up to about 13.5. So I unplugged the two yellow wires coming from the stator (dynamo in the manual) and checked for........ okay as I'm writing this I realize I'm not checking for AC at these wires. This is not my strong point! I'll recheck the afternoon when I get off work and let you know what I find. Thank you for your help.

Yes, the yellow wires get checked with AC, and the reading is only meaningful when they are NOT connected to a rectifier/regulator. They can be connected to a dummy load to get a power reading.
Also:
Battery voltage will usually rise slightly at higher RPMs, with no charging system at all, because the ignition uses much less power at high RPMs. It will usually raise almost .5 volts from idle, when revved steadily. (This may not be true with aftermarket ignitions, though.)
