yeah i could imagine 1 hr 46 min and 32 seconds of an aircooled motor idling would definately cause enough heat to melt those coils, they are only plastic!id definately run the compression test before you spend money on coils .id also recomend an oil and filter change before you get her running again ,heating up like that would turn the oil to the consistancy of laquer thinner while it was running and probably sludge one it cooled back down!:S

Yep, I will do a compression test, replace the coils & wires, oil change, etc.
From what I've read so far, I should get at least 110psi per cylinder, right?
Also, do I need to take into account the compression ratio for my bike? It's 8.9:1
Thanks to all for pointing me in the right direction. I really appreciate it.

pay no attention to tha 8.9:1 number thats just static compression number the factory used as a blanket number to cover that series of bike.the actual cranking compression or cylinder compression is what you need to compare between the cylinders ,which can also vary depending on ring seal and valve adjustment.

Went out & bought a compression tester.
Removed the plugs, full throttle, cranked it 8 times on each cylinder & here's my results from Left to Right:
125, 130, 125, 135
Remember, I can't start it to get it warm & I didn't add a teaspoon of oil to check the rings, but otherwise that sound right to y'all?

yeah they are pretty close together, checking valve clearances might bring them up a little but i think it will live.now change that oil and while you are changing coils check the rest of wiring under tank and seat to make sure nothing else got hot and melted.

That's death on an air cooled motor.

While I have it partially apart, I think I'll ck the valves too. But trust me... this will NEVER happen again !!!
Regarding the blued pipes - not any more than they already are (which isn't all that bad)

I'll make a circuit that automatically shuts off the bike after 2 minutes. That's going to rough, on a long trip, though.

That would be GREAT !! So, how would it work? My only concern about 2 mins is LLLLLLLOOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGGG stoplights - unless you somehow linked it to neutral (idiot) light circuit.

hook it to a mercury switch so it will only work when bike is leaning on kickstand, just make sure you dont make any 2 minute left turns!
