Alright. I'm going to order the kit. I already have the 3-ohm Dyna coils. I'm a little further ahead on the GPZ than the picture shows. Thanks again for the tips, everyone.

Here it is.

The Dyna S does not include timing advance. You will have to get an earlier model mechanical advancer.

You may want to consider the Dyna 2000 (DDK2-1C).

The DDK2-1C can be had for $400 online and comes complete with coils .
It is jam packed with features such as a rev limiter, optional ign curves and much more.
Not to mention with an optional programing cable you can tap into more features such as a pair RPM activated switches.

Richard -GPZ

I searched and it seams the ‘82 GPZ has a mechanical advancer. Part number 21148-1020.

I am sorry I looked at the diagram online and thought the Governor-Breaker was a ignition rotor.
Thank you Mikaw for correcting my mistake.
I will try harder next time to look closer at the detail diagram.

Anyways I still believe the Dyna 200 (DDK2-1C) is a better choice if it is within your budget.

Richard-GPZ,

If you can answer this for me how would the internal ignition cure of the 2k work if the bike has a mechanical advancer. Seams one would conflict the other.

Not high jacking here, the OP is looking for advice on ingition replacement options. The more information you get the better choices you make.

The 2000 replaces the advancer with a fixed rotor.

Thank you Zed1015. Is this one of those K.I.S.S situation. The more tech you add the more possibilities for failure. I’m interested in the 2000 because it has a rev limiter.

Unless you are racing or fitting a turbo you won't really need a rev limiter.
I fitted a Separate Dyna DRL300 limiter on my Supercharged zed and never hit it so took it off for my turbo build.

Zed1015 you may be interested in the 2000 because it has input wire that will trigger an ignition retard .
You can also create a custom ignition curve and a custom retard curve tailored to your turbo application.

Kidkawie wrote: Only issue I had on my Z1b was (from what everyone has told me) the pickups are installed backwards from the factory, so when you install them you are maxed out in one direction (I forget which) for timing adjustments. From what I hear its an ongoing problem and I just need to swap pickup locations. I got it timed, but its litterally at the very end of adjustment.

I also plan on soldering the harness instead of depending on those wire taps.

You may have the wrong rotor fitted which will cause that problem.
There are two types marked either 3 and 3A.
3A is for the early Z1 rotor and 3 for the later 900/1000 rotor stamped 005.

Z1b. Unless someone swapped out the rotor from the packaging, but multiple people said the coils are reversed.

It's sort of a tradeoff. The Dyna-S is very simple electrically. The Dyna 2000 is very simple mechanically, as it removes the mechanical advancer. I haven't heard many people talk about the 2000, but it's been around for a long time and Dyna products seem to be well made in general.

The only risk I can think of with the Dyna 2000 is that it's susceptible to electrical noise, as it's microprocessor based. So that might require using resistor plugs or caps, or moving the box around.

Another less expensive option for a rev limiter is a Dyna DRL-300. Looks like you can get them new for around $130. I'm guessing it's probably an analog box as opposed to a microprocessor. It seems pretty simple, and has also been around for a long time. I have one on my Z1R paired up with a Dyna III. It works, but the cutoff isn't too precise.

I added the DRL-300 because I have, on a few occasions, had the bike shift into neutral instead of second on a spirited 1-2 shift, and watched the needle sail into the red. :)

I agree with that statement and as i stated "not really needed unless running a turbo".
On the supercharged zed i modified the advancer to max out at 32 degrees and on my turbo build i am using a period boost retard Bill Hahn dizzy that can be adjusted for pressure activation and degree of retard.
If that wasn't the case i would use a 2000 .
