As an aside, these starters have a reduction gearbox on the end which if dry make high load on the electric starter motor. When you reassemble the starter ensure the gears are well greased and are meshing correctly. If all is correct you should be able to turn the starter motor over by hand when it is off the bike.

A reduction gearbox? I do not see one in he parts diagram?...

Part #7 on the diagram Scirocco posted earlier in the thread Tex. It's inside the casing on the right hand side and can't be seen on the partzilla diagram.

Yup I was going to pick up a tube of grease cause I noticed that reduction gear. What brand would you recommend? My local parts shop mainly carries pennzoil, castrok, and shell products.

Any general purpose grease is fine. The unit is semi sealed but 40 odd years is a long time with no maintenance.

Thanks everyone for the help! Got the armature cleaned up and rebuilt the starter. Found out that one of the brackets holding a brush was almost burnt completely off. Just put it back on the bike and started it without any issues. You won't believe how happy I am right now!
