Alright, well that would explain it. Maybe he made an adapter to hold the 78 stator in place of the 77 field coil. I've often wondered if the 78/79 charging system could be installed in the earlier motors... seemed possible but I wondered about the cover differences.

Yep. He said exactly that, that he made an adapter. Still didnt go beyond that to explain why he did it though. Im taking the lifePo4 battery out though.

Whats a good lead or agm replacement?

I used to recommend the Scorpion from batterystuff.com, but the last few have not lasted like they used to.

I have been really pleased with Yuasa AGM. The one currently in my ZRX is 10 1/2 years old.

1982 KZ1000 LTD parts donor
