No injector pulse on 82 gpz1100
15 Mar 2018 11:58
Hi guys I’m new to the form.
I’m having trouble with my 82 gpz1100 getting injector pulse. I bought the bike in boxes and previously had carburetors and I switched back to injection. My problem is I can not get the yellow injector wire from the ECU to supply ground to the injectors. The white with red wire has power supplied to injectors. I’ve used my manual to try and diagnose the problem. Tested the main relay and pump relay. Tested the igniter and all circuits following the diagnostics of my manual. Found nothing wrong so I replaced the ECU with another from a wrecker. Still no injection ground signal. So it’s either my electrical is at fault or I have purchased another faulty ECU. Any help would be great thank you. If some can tell me how the engine speed signal works off the green and black wires from the coils would be nice. I have 12 volts key on to each wire and ground. When probing the green and black engine speed wires and cranking the engine I get 1.2 to 3.5 AC volts.

Following this with interest Vincent. I purchased an 80 Z1 Classic a few months ago and I'm about to dig into it in a week or two. Is KZRider and the manual your primary source of tech support? (I purchased the factory supplement for mine as well).
Some pics of the bike would be great.

Found this in an other Kawasaki forum...
The injectors fire at 3 volts, so if you decide to pull them for electrical checkout DO NOT APPLY MORE THAN 3 VOLTS and then use a 3 volt light bulb as a current limiter, otherwise the injector coil will burn out. I use a 3 volt self powered test light for electrical checks on my injectors.

So I now have injector pulse. I believe my starter signal wire had a bad connection because I played with that and after cleaning the connection I have pulse. The bike still does not run though. Sadly it seems like the cam timing is off. I only get around 115 psi compression cold. Seems to back fire through the throttle bodies once in a while. Anyway thanks guys. It’s bAck to the drawing board.

Nice photos! The cat and dog one is great. They both want that bike to run!

I figured out why it would not run. After pulling the valve cover off and rechecking the valve timing to find it’s correct. I felt the ignition timing may be off so I took a slow motion video with my phone of the spark plug out of the head grounding on the block. In the video I could see cylinder 4 was firing on the bottom of the intake stroke . I could see the valves and piston perfectly. I checked cylinder 3 and it fired correct on compression of cylinder 4. The clymer manual and Kawasaki manuals both have the coil primary wires routed wrong. They state the left coil for cylinders 1 and 4 have the green wire and the right coil has the black wire. My bike is running with the wires switched so either my harness has been messed with by someone or the book is wrong.

On some models the crank trigger can be installed 180 degrees off.

The black primary wire is meant to fire 1 and 4. The green primary wire is meant to fire 2 and 3. This is true on all Kz inline fours.
The bike can run with opposite wiring if other things (pickup wires or rotor position) are swapped as well (this is a good troubleshooting tool), but I'm not sure if a fuel injected bike has a simple Kz ignition.
The big fours have the 1-4 coil on the left, and the 2-3 coil on the right.
The small fours (400/500/550/650/700/750) have the coils mounted opposite.
The mounting position doesn't matter, but it's easier to troubleshoot if the bike is as it came from the factory.

This is weird because my manual straighten up states the left coil fires one and four and is mounted on the left with the green wire. The Kawasaki manual for GPZ 1100’s states the same thing. Also the coil and trigger should be correct because it is mounted next to the TEC mark.

This is a picture of the removal installation in the manual.
