The ignition coil should function even if suspended in mid-air.
Perhaps the previous lack of spark resulted from shortage of high tension voltage through a plug wire -- maybe an old hard cracked worn-out plug wire -- which leakage was fortuitously prevented when the plug wires were moved and re-positioned incident to remounting the coil.
New solid-core Dyna plug wires (available at Z1 Enterprises} will prevent such leaking voltage issues.

It's quite possible that is exactly what happened. New plug wires are on the shopping list for this project in the near future. Thanks for all of your input and expertise on the subject! It's good to know there are folks like you out here that freely share what they know!
