1987 KZ1000P Crashed the speed/tach cluster
04 Jan 2016 12:06
Hi everybody, thanks for having me on your forums! I love my bike, I will probably never get rid of it, that's why I'm excited to have found a forum dedicated to KZ's. That being said I recently dropped it turning right too fast in wet conditions and I broke the handlebars and smashed up the speedometer/tachometer cluster really bad. Replacing the handlebars was a piece of cake and only cost me $30 but all the clusters I have found on the internet so far are either overpriced, ugly, or both.
Now I'm not a purist that needs to have the original cluster, if anybody can recommend a nice universal cluster or set that would fit on my 1987 KZ1000p that would be really great. I've already looked around on the internet and found a few universal ones that weren't clusters and weren't clear on how they would fit on. so I figured I would ask the pro's and see what they recommend. Hopefully one of you might have solved a similar problem or have some experience with replacing speed/tach clusters and can give me some good advice.
One other quick question, since the speed/tach cluster is destroyed my odometer is of course off, is there anything legal I have to do in regards to that? Thanks in advance everybody

Acewell and Moto Gadget both make interesting aftermarket guages.
For legal advice, check with your local DMV, as the laws can be quit different from one place to another.
I think that most any guage set from a post-1981 Kawasaki 1000 or 1100 should work. One thing to watch for is whether the speedometer is cable drivin or electronic. The easiest choice is to use whatever drive system your bike already has. You may also have to do a little fabrication to get a different mounting bracket to work on your bike.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationAfter working on used ones I bought these. Won them for $275.

Speedo is working great. The tach flutters a bit due to the drive being sloppy.

That's it, I'm going to strip my top triple clamp and polish it. Tired of chipped paint. They look great.

Re: 1987 KZ1000P Crashed the speed/tach cluster
05 Jan 2016 11:11Just an FYI. The KZ1000 P meter assy was virtually unchanged thru the model run (1982-2005 or so)..... I recently dropped it turning right too fast in wet conditions and I broke the handlebars and smashed up the speedometer/tachometer cluster really bad. Replacing the handlebars was a piece of cake and only cost me $30 but all the clusters I have found on the internet so far are either overpriced, ugly, or both.

....
Alternative gauge cluster: ZRX1100 gauges
You'd have to fab up some sort of meter bracket.

The 1000P police has an electronic tachometer.

Re: 1987 KZ1000P Crashed the speed/tach cluster

After two rebuilds of my speedo... it still wobbles all over + or - 6 mph... so, I'm giving up. Well, I might try and drill out that small diameter dampening tube and see what is in it... LOL.
My tach now bogs down at about 6500rpm and I can't tell what's the real rpm, as the motor revs cleanly but the tach drags behind the sound of it... I know its around 8000-8500rpm in the gears and aprox MPH I am familiar with, but it slowly climbs up as the revs don't... weird.

I'm glad I bought the new ones. Speedo hold steady. I'll get another tach drive before I say anything about the tach.
