2 different coils on my bike

10 Jul 2009 20:08
#306074
Hi, while working on the Wired George Coil Mod and doing some maintenance I noticed that my #1 and 4 coil appears to not be stock (it doesn't fit the bracket properly, is smaller than the other one, and the power wires for it had to be spliced) The PO told me he replaced a coil just before selling it...the bike runs fine, no major issues that I can tell, is it a big problem to have different ignition coils on the same bike? If so is getting some used ones a problem, I am kind of broke right now and I don't think they are particularly cheap on Z1E...

If she's been working well then I don't see any problem having 2 different coils. They should be the same or similar in Ohm range, but size doesn't matter. ;)

yeah if it runs dont sweat it ....post a pic of the coils and folks'l chime in and let you know what's the next move if any.....you can watch auctions and get some smoking deals...i got new /uninstalled green dyna 3 ohm coils in the orig box and with the paperwork for like 60...although i watched a few go real high $ first.....some auto zone wires and no more issues.......post piocs....good luck....craig

p.s used coils get bids too...just wait they will go for less.....my 2 cents

In the manuals you'll find testing coils.... A resistance measurement alone would inform you quite a bit...

Things to think about/look for/test....

what are the conditions of your 1/4 plugs vs. 2/3 plugs? Do they burn the same, or is one set more carboned or burning hotter....

Are you header pipes burning ~ the same in temp between 1/4 vs 2/3 pipes...

Are you noticing any flat spots in performance in rpm ranges....

Any popping sounds out the pipe....

Start up smoke...

You may be ok as mentioned but you should explore and test just the same...

My FSM shows the coil being tested by an "electrotester" and warns if it is not available, it can be checked with an Ohm meter "for a broken or badly shorted winding, however, an ohm meter cannot detect layer shorts or shorts resulting from insulation breakdown under voltage"...... and in my experience with HV transformers, the last ailment accounted for nearly all the failures.

If the primary side resistance is similar to stock (not lower) I don't think you would have a problem.

I agree, an ohm test can verify if a coil is bad, but can't prove a coil is good. A spark test rig is the best way, especially if you can put the plug in a clear 200 psi chamber. Or just take the plug gap and multiply it by 14 and make the spark jump across that gap in open air.

I'm totally with you on that guys but who here has one of the "electrotester" depicted in the manuals.... Inductance meter would be better than resistance but still this wouldn't inform you of breakdowns while powered...

If it was my project (I know, it's not), for the price of $120 from Z1, buy a new set of coils....

Hell, who knows in the fist place (PO) why one of them went bad and how it old it is... Probably the original...

cool, at the moment I am broke as f&^k so I can't afford the coils...but if I did are the wires and caps that come with them good? I just replaced my wires with some new DYnas.

For better understanding, why are you doing this mod anyways?

Example, coils not receiving the ideal +12Vdc?
Black sooty plugs (see previous mentioned about this)...
Weak spark...
RPM / carb operations....

I am doing the mod because my plugs are sooty, I haven't checked voltsage to the coils yet, but I don't see a downside to doing the coil mod so I thought I would do it as part of my "new" bike routine

"I haven't checked voltsage to the coils yet,"...

If you have +12Vdc or a little higher to your coils then this isn't going to any thing for you, NONE what so ever...

Also, running 4-1 exhaust and POD's on the carbs then jetting may be your problem..

Since you also posted in th regards to different coils then this may be your problem as well or ignition timing issues...

Time for you to get out the volt meter and start taking some measurements... ;)
