Horn Button Tip
06 Jan 2008 00:25
I took my horn button apart recently for troubleshooting and cleaning purposes. There are two tiny ball "bearings" inside there that make the button work. Without them there is no way for the contacts to properly touch to close the circuit.
I found putting it back together to be very difficult because the two springs would fall out of the button as I was trying to line everything up. It was very easy to drop those little balls out too. In fact, after the 2nd time loosing them, I couldn't find the 2nd one. I spent about 2 hours looking for the little bugger. Kaw doesn't offer individual parts for the horn button so I was on my own with trying to find a replacement.
I bought a box of 16 gauge shotgun shells, cracked one open and the balls in it were almost an exact match. During the reassembly process, I lost about 10 more but it didn't matter because I now have thousands!
Bottom line is that it is now re-assembled and those balls work perfectly! So, if you happen to loose one of those little bad boys, save yourself some serious cussing and just crack open a shotgun shell.

Sure, they are Federal Brand Steel Water Fowl Shot Shells. 12 gauge - 2 3/4" long - 6 Shot - 1 oz
That's everything on the box & I got them at walmart.

Also, if you stick to hacking at the top of the shell, you won't hit any gun powder anyway since it is at the base of the shell.
That's why I soaked it in water first.id be a little too worried about that shell going off in my face these days though:S

you could also just buy some #6 steel shot from a reloading supplier. There are several out there.
That's an interesting fix, who'd have thought?

The only way a shotgun shell will go off is if you hit the primer. Just take a knife and cut the shell in half in the plastic part....chris3
