i was working on my 1977 kz 650 tonight and my friend stopped by to give me a hand, i thought great (its always nice to have a 2nd set of hands) I had to run inside to grab something and by the time i came out he had managed to break the kill switch on the z1 900. I guess he was flicking it back and forth and it broke off. Now the bike wont start and there is no spark. Obviously the kill switch is stuck in the off position. Here is my question iff i eliminate the wire from the kill switch will i be able to start the bike. I just orderd a new right handlebar switch from Z1. thanks

Find the colour-code for the "Hot" wires at the switch, and just connect them together, bypassing the switch altogether.;)

i dont have a wiring diagragm for a z1 handy but on a 78kz1000 diagragm there is a brown power wire that runs to kill switch which feeds to a yellow wire with red tracer which feeds the starter ciruit and ignition circuit.you just need a jumper wire from the brown to the yellow/red or which ever color you have.make sense?;)

you can disconect it but you need to connect it to the starter button so your electric start will work unless you want to kickstart it,but youll still need to power ignition circuit though which is fed from same cicuit

Not sounding like an Idiot at all,Bud.
You MIGHT get lucky, and be able to lock the switch in the Run position,as long as it's not completely messed up in there. Not too sure about the room You'll have, also.
Just remember not to let it short out,on the handlebars,or You could end up with OTHER issues.Keep any wires from hanging loosely...solder,shrink-tube,black tape,zap-straps...

hard telling without having it in front of me,its just a set of contacts if you can take it apart.sometimes if ya tap or jiggle things just right miracles have been known to happen!:P i keep my wiring really basic!:P
