I'm toying with the idea of repositioning my coils because the ones I have (Accel) were used and don't really fit my bike in the stock mounting brackets. My question is whether or not the coils have to be grounded to the frame. Thanks

"Electrically" they must have a _return_ connection, commonly called a ground, which is normally to the frame. Physically, they do not have to be connected to anything in particular. Sometimes in fact, things look like they are connected to the frame, when in fact they are electrically isolated from it. Like, sometimes regulators/rectumfriers for example.

The coils don't have to be grounded to the frame. The secondary current flows through the coils through the plug wires.

When a coil only has one plug lead, then the coil's secondary return is tied to the iron core which is grounded to the frame, in order to complete the secondary path.

However, the iron core of the coil is also a pathway for magnetism. I can't say if spark energy will be any different if you take the coils off the frame ( I suspect it won't matter).

Thanks guys. As bad as it sounds, I'm going to temporarily use a couple of large hose clamps until I can get something machined. Thanks again for the quick replies.

Geesh, it is awkward calling somebody "whatever"... do you have a name? Anyway, most folks will use one bolt for accel coils and then use a cable tire through the other coil mount hole attached to the frame tube to mount the other side.

Bad, bad, bad.

Especially if you overlook orienting the clamp to keep it from creating a wearhole in the part of the gastank that will contact it.

:woohoo:
