You can buy small letters from hobby shops, Frank's or Micheals they work great. They are on a clear sheet and you rub them on to the surface.

I tried Hobby Lobby and Office Depot..they only have black in the small ones. In white they are like 2 inches at the smallest. I know exactly what you are talking about , just can't find them.

I did mine the same way as ltdrider. They came out looking pretty good. I took one bristle out of a model paint brush to fill in the lettering.
