I'm going to replace the carb holder boots on my '78 Z1R (part number 16065-029 and 16065-028). I see that both parts are still available from Kawasaki, unlike with the KZ650.

I know that K&L makes a part, and I think Sudco makes one (or resells one). Z1 enterprises has some but doesn't say who makes them. And I'm sure some aftermarket outfit in Japan makes one.

I was wondering if anyone had advice for which one would be the best, or any brand to avoid. Of course the Kawasaki parts are about twice as expensive as the other options. But what I care about most is that they seal well and last.

Im looking to replace mine also. I'll be following this closely. Last ones I replaced took me almost 6 months to continually shop Fleebay to find bargains on NOS.

This was one of those areas I felt best to go OEM with. It took a few weeks, but eventually I found two at one place and two at another for a decent price. As I recall both were "make an offer" sales on ebay.

All my zeds are fitted with pattern rubbers from either Ebay , Tourmax, M&P or Wemoto and i have had no problem with any of them.
I've a set of pattern ones on my Z1R that have been on there nearly 20 years.
Whether new or old , OEM or pattern, i always put a thin smear of RTV on the sealing face and leave overnight with the mounting bolts lightly seated..
The next day i tighten fully and peel of any excess from the inside and outside.
Never had one leak .

I bought my 1977 KZ650-C1 in 1977 when it was new. The original carb holders began leaking rather badly after 27 years. I replaced them with genuine Kawasaki carb holders in 2005, and those still do not leak at all. So my opinion is to buy genuine Kawasaki parts. Ed

We've used OEM and aftermarket holders without being able to ascertain any difference in longevity.

ZED1015's technique of wiping a thin coat of sealant on the sealing face is very sound advice too.

One thing we do routinely is, to spray & wipe them with some sort of protestant such as Armor All, at least once a year, most times after washing, and always when we take one of our Z1's out of mothballs after sleeping a few years. Feed the rubber.

Hmm... I guess I'm still on the fence. I probably should buy the Kawasaki parts, but I'm tempted to try to the parts from Z1 enterprises. They look good in the picture. :)

In any case, I was already thinking of using a very small amount of silicone sealer. I have a tube of ThreeBond that I used on my '95 GPz1100. I believe it's equivalent to Kawasaki part 56019-120 recommended for that model, which looks like it might be ThreeBond TB1211. I don't have the tube in front of me to check.

Does that should like a reasonable product for this task?

I would not use any sealer, and certainly not silicone. Kawasaki did not use sealer and the manual does not call for it. I did not use sealer when I replaced my carb holders and they do not leak at all. You may find that the sealer is drawn into the engine by the vacuum that takes place inside the carb holders. Ed
