Not sure of the differences but they are not the same part numbers so they must be different somehow. Maybe diameter? Float valves are also different part numbers.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Floats on your photos has 16031-031 part number. They used in carburetors of 1976-1981 KZ1000 and KZ650

Part number of float for 1973-1975 Z1 is 16031-024. It has completely different (asymmetrical) design.

Part number changed in 76, they look the same to me, 1973 used wide and narrow float, the bowls and floats changed sometime in 74 from big drain to drain screw.
Very strange, I was opeing someone would know.

Z series Kawasaki Service Bulletin #SER 74 Z-31 dated 5-27-74 documents the changes to the carbs beginning with engine # Z1E-032866.
The (old) asymmetrical float # is 16031-024.
The (new) symmetrical float # is 16031-028.

Carb body ID #'s:
(old) 147 0, or 147 1, or 147 2.
(new) 217 0.

The following carb parts were changed at the same time:
Needle jet (P-8) #13017-064 > (0-8) #16017-086.
Needle jet holder 16047-002 > #16047-003 (different dimensions).
Pilot jet (#20) #92064-035 > (#17.5) #92064-042 (different dimensions).
Throttle valve (2.5 cutaway) #16025-051 > (1.5 cutaway) #16025-075.
Float bowls (large drain plug, all 4 cylinders) #16020-015 > (small drain screw) #16020-016 for cylinders 1 and 2 only. #16020-017 for cylinders 3 and 4 only.

Fuel level gauge:
(old) #57001-122
(new) #57001-208

We realize that this doesn't address the post-76 compatibility question, but perhaps will be helpful anyway.

EDIT 1: - KZRider.com continues to fail with a 403 error code when we attempt to access it only from home with Firefox or any other browser. The obscure browser/VPN workaround we have to use for KZRider doesn't often play nice with attachments. Don't know why. We posted the referenced service bulletin as attachments in both .pdf and .jpg. but cannot tell if they're visible to the members.
73z1, if you cannot see the service bulletin please send us a PM with your email & we'll send it to that way.

EDIT 2: We can see the .jpg's correctly, but not the .pdf's. That's progress of sorts If anyone can see the .pdf's please let us know via PM.

Slimjim,
Thanks for your note and help, and everyone's help.
The 75 and 76 floats look the same to me, I bought a 76 float for $15, will report when received (75 float was $40).

The VM 26 floats and slides were the same as my VM 28's. I switched them but had to buy 2.5 needle valves due to the bike starving for fuel on the grade against the wind. The jets fit but were too small for my 1015, V/H and Andrews cam setup.

I believe there is a slight difference in the Late 74-75 Z1 float. I have ran across this doing this era of carbs. The early "big 17mm" bowl drain floats are completely different so that is obvious. The difference I believe is the slight change of positioning of how the tang assy is moulded into the float material. Either float Will work though. Best tip is to assemble attaining as close to perpendicular relationship of float needle to float tang as possible. If needed a slight bend of the brass as it enters each float may be required or shimming with an extra washer under needle seat. Don't stack too many shim washers, binding may occur between float seat and brass dowel where float pin goes thru. Of course depressing after each tweek to assure complete depression of float/float needle pin spring does not hit the upper chamber of carb casting.
