I'm currently restoring / converting a 1982440 ltd into a scrambler. when I got the bike it ran with the standard airbox reasonably well . But I was wanting to put pod fillters on which I have done before with a few bikes with great success . so after trying everthing from this forum and other internet sources I managed a good idle and a reasonable rev range but it's just not there . so thought I would put the air box back on to test if these carbs are as fussy as people say and you know what they are. So my next plan is to put two mikuni carbs on, they should work with pods . I know it seems a lot of money but what the hell.

I hope it goes well for you. The Mikuni carbs will bring thier own set of challenges.

I may be getting old and forgetful, but in all the years I have been skulking around here, I do not remember a single pod - carb conversion thread on a 400/440 turning out to run as well as the factory setup. Maybe yours will be different.

I agree. I haven't read of anyone finding the magic formula. Ed

I kind of remember someone having success by adding ducts between the individual pod filters & enclosing them in a simple box.

I tried silicon hose extensions between the carb and pod filter to give a volume of air similar to the air box . it did work but not well enough the list of things I've tried is long and I did get it so you could ride it but it wasn't to my standards . so my two options are 1 original airbox which i could hide with fancy panels or 2 mikuni carbs which are more forgiving if tuning.

There is a third option. Use the DynoJet jet kit for the KZ750H/E.
The two have similar displacement and carb size.
KZ440 -- 221cc w/36mm
KZ750 -- 185cc w/34mm
You may have to go up or down on the secondary main depending on your bike.
I posted this before but, some people seem to 'forget'

Clearly, I am mistaken. I apologize and will do my best not to "forget" anything in the future.

I converted a 400 to pods and it ran every bit as good as the stock setup. I've posted the details several times with a video. I guess selective memory is the norm.

That's probably true. If you still have the jetting info or link to details maybe you can post it to give parkinson a starting point for his jetting project. Ed

If the carbs loudhvx worked on are the early piston style vs. diaphragm the jetting will be different.
Also engine displacement will have an effect.

Yes, they were the earlier piston types which is why I didn't have advice for the original poster in this thread. I was just responding to the remark that there was never a successful pod conversion on 400's.

So is there anyone out there who has been successful at running pods on a 1982 440 ltd like the one the original poster owns? If so, maybe they can post some info that will give him a good starting point as far as jetting is concerned. Ed
