Effect of missing needle springs?
20 Jul 2015 12:23 - 20 Jul 2015 12:25
After taking the slides out this weekend on my KZ650 (wth VM24SS) I think my needles might be missing some parts.
I don't recall seeing parts 46, 47, or 48. Is the diagram correct? Should there be a spring between the needle cir-clip and the slide body?
I'll check again soon, I think I'm one float adjustment away from the correct fuel level, So the carbs will be off anyway.

I agree the diagram is confusing - I have a box of old disassembled carbs (just 'cause you never know) and went out to check.
No spring between the circlip and slide body, you aren't missing anything - parts 45, 46, 47 and 48 are part of the slide linkage and won't come out by taking the slides or needle out, I don't even think they can come out without ruining the throttle valve bracket (part 14). If you look at the bottom of part 14 you can see part 46 pressed into the center.
Also notice that parts 45 - 48 don't appear individually in the parts list as they're part of no. 14.
When disassembled you should have the linkage (parts 5 - 14), two bolts, slide, needle and circlip, that's all.

Cool. So those are the parts inside the bracket? Similar to the spring and other bits inside the throttle arm?
The parts are available separately, so perhaps there's a way to rebuilt the bracket.
Plate: 13169-1107
Ring: 92027-1103
Washer: 92022-1024
Spring: 92081-1072
Glad to know I'm probably not missing any parts.

Out of sheer curiousity and since I have more slides than carb bodies I decided to check it out. You definitely can't rebuild the throttle valve bracket (part 14), I had to drill through the top of it to get to parts 47 and 48, I don't see any way (or need) to disassemble the bracket once it's pressed together.
Did you get those numbers from a parts fiche? They don't appear in Kawasaki's online parts list, I guess they're from a manufacturing bill of material rather than a spare parts list.

I got the numbers from the parts PDF on this page.
www.jarlef.no/Kawasaki/Series/Z/650/z650files.htm
www.jarlef.no/Kawasaki/PDF/Z650/Files/KZ650B1toB3.pdf
I see that there's some omissions (like you said) on other parts diagrams.

IIRC the springs were used on the needles on the set of carbs that have no adjustment for the needle (single slot)

Hey Bruce, long time no see. You may well be right, then I have misidentified the parts. I wasn't even aware that any 650 carbs came with a single slot needle, is that a US emissions/tamperproof thing?

Yes that is my understanding. Some of the carb sets used on the (K)Z650s sold in the US market have only one slot on the needle. Info I can find indicates this for the 5CL30 needle -not claiming 100% accurate, but what I can find - which I think came in all of accelerator pump carbs. On the carbs that do make use of a spring, there should be a well of sorts on the slide that the spring fits into.
