setting float level with clear tube.

The book says 3 mil plus or minus one from the bottom of the carb body. Theres a 2 mil difference to where the gasket seats. Should one measure from where the gasket seats, or the real bottom of the carb body, which is 2 mil below where the gasket seats. Thanks Stan

Just like it says, the bottom of the carb body, which is the gasket surface.

The gasket surface stuff is when you check the float height w the carburetors dry, upside down, & with the carb bowls removed - the measurement is taken from the gasket surface (gasket removed).
So you can't really use the gasket surface when checking the actual fuel level... unless you have x-ray vision or something. :P

just showing the gasket surface.

The 2 mil is presumably width of the "lip" surrounding the gasket area, whereby the bottom edge of the lip is lower than the gasket area.

Text from both the Z1~KZ900 FSM and 1977~1979 KZ1000 FSM reads "...from the edge of the carburetor body."

Which imo should probably be interpreted as measuring from bottom edge of the lip, as opposed to measuring from the gasket surface area.

And concurs with martin_csr. :cheer:

I just went through this process on my 1300. I didn't use the special tool just a piece of clear tubing that would fit over the drain. Actually, I had problems with the size of the tubing because every time I opened the drain the fuel would flow but would leave a bubble of air up near the carb. depending on the size of the bubble the reading would vary widely. Eventually I used two sizes of tubing, one that fit over the drain and a smaller tube that fit inside the first tube. When fitted with the smaller tube the fuel would force all the air ahead of the fuel and I finally started getting repeatable measurements.
