Pods Vs. Henry Abe air cleaner (The Bread Box)
27 Jun 2012 14:52 - 28 Jun 2012 08:40
Has anyone used one of these? 1 filter for all four carbs. Sounds like a great idea. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I bought one for my cb750 but haven't got around to getting it cleaned up and on the bike, here's a link to how to properly set up the foam filter element someone on the Honda forum posted.

Yes I was looking at that the other day when I decided to but the bread box. Thanks for the response. I should have mine in a couple of days I will post some pics and if it makes a difference over pods.

I was watching an Abe air filter on ebay a few weeks ago before I decided to go with the k&n rc-2222s. The Abe should be even easier to tune and it looks cool.

Haha, such a good movie. I hear people get together and do the funeral procession ride in Aus annually, or so a friend says.
I'm hoping the bread box works out on my cb, what I like about it is that it. Uses the stock airbox boots/stacks inside, which the hondas seem to run better with. If it all works out I'd like to find one for my kz1000 once it's roadworthy. The PO had pods on it and I'm not a huge fan of pods, thought hopefully he had it jetted for them back in the day.

I was thinking that if it works well I may start reproducing some. Maybe out of fiberglass or better yet carbon fiber. Maybe just aluminum.

Here is the bread box. Was in great shape. Had to come up with some filter material. I did tape off the inside about 1 1/2" in to help avoid cross wind. I also sprayed the filter material with filter oil.

Jenkrider- its running great. I put some Uni 1/2" oil filter material in and it runner great.
So lets get to business. Prior to the change I was running Emigo pods south 120 pilots and 125 mains. Ran great after 1/4 throttle run lean idle to 1/4. Was about to replace pilots when I saw this beautiful bread box.
After the change, keep in mind I did some mods to the ends to prevent cross wind. It now runs perfect at idle to 1/4 then gets a little rich so I have some changes to make. 122.5 mains are on the way. May have to pay with the needle a bit.

I bought a 76 KZ 900 LTD last winter. It is pretty much stock except for the pods. It hadn't been used for quite a few years. wasnt running. I have been buggering around with the carbs, trying to find the magic jet and needle combo to make it run half decent....no luck, just like everyone else who are running pods on their KZ. I read this thread and remembered that in the box of stuff that came with the bike there was the bread box that you pictured. So I got some filter material, aluminum tape and set it up the same way you did. After some more buggering around with the carbs, I think I have an acceptable level of performance.
120 mains
stock pilot at one turn
stock needle - clip in bottom notch
seems to pull through all rpm range, and pulls hard in fifth from 4k up. I might drop the needle one notch to see if it is any better, but I am pretty close to the mark I think.

Where running pods is the only feasible option, stock 26mm Mikuni manual slide carbs as fitted on the 76 KZ 900 LTD should function with pods as well as any carb can function with pods.
Would assure all other tuning items have been attended to, such as spark quality, ignition timing, and assuring all valve clearances are within specs.
And that the pods are free-flowing (not dirty or over-oiled).
And fuel supply is ample and clean, with fitment of a good aftermarket in-line filter.
And that the fuel tank vent is properly functioning .
And that fuel levels are within spec, as evidenced by the clear tube test.
And thereafter assure that the carbs are perfectly clean.
Here's one cleaning method that works pretty well:
With carbs on the bench, remember to bench-sync them, and allow sufficient thread on the idle adjust screw to further lower the slides when later performing the running sync.
Good Fortune!
