Unless the boots are absolutely knacked ie : split or has hard as concrete, there's no shame in sealing them. And if you haven't got the dosh, well...no brainer.
Like all tasks, big or small, you just need to make good neat job to the best of your abilities, and use a good quality sealant. I always use Hylomar Universal Blue. It's stood the test of time in many industries, and is non-setting which always helps if you need to get things apart at a later date. Technical information at the URL below

I agree entirely 650ed.......but!
For some people the depth of their pocket does dictate, especially if they're biking on a budget. As I said above "Unless the boots are absolutely knacked ie : split or has hard as concrete" sealing the mating surface between the boot face and the intake manifold holds no problems as long as the job is done properly with a good sealant. After all, isn't this what motorcycle maintenanance is all about.

15 Apr 2012 08:22Sounds interesting, but wondering about long term durability under simultaneous exposure to both heat and gasoline.saxonpirate wrote: ...Hylomar Universal Blue....
For example, Permatex represents some of its products as heat proof, and other of its products as gasoline proof, but not one that's both heat proof and gasoline proof.
Any of the temporary sealing fixes for carb holders are imo likely better than nothing (and probably outlast some girlfriends).
Good Fortune!
