Want to drill out 127.5 mains
26 Mar 2012 01:55
Gemtlemen, I am converting a barn fresh 81 GPZ1100 to carbs and the 34 MM carbs that just arrived from ebay have 127.5 jets in them which was stock for later 1100's that I can see in my research. Since I am junking the non working fuel injection for carbs and adding the emgo air filter pods it looks like I need to go up to 130 mains (one step up). Is there a drill bit called 130?
Thanks

Drilling jets is not easy. I recall the number of the jet relates to the area of the hole in circular mils(?) It's not related to a drill diameter. And to get the small increments, you need a set of drills in very close size range not readily available. Buy the jets if they are available.

+1 on
Run the 127.5 and see what happens. all depends on how much you ride with wide open throttle.

My opinion is 130 would still be too lean for an 1100 running pods. I would think you need 135-140 on the mains and 40-42.5 on the pilots. My setup is below for my 83 1100 Spectre, and am still fine tuning it but am very close.
K&N RU-0984 pods
pilot 42.5 (too rich dropping to 40)
Mains 137.5 (close, possibly a touch on rich side)
Needles 5IX11 (5 notch adjustable)

Grant, thanks for the great insight. Looks like I should order 135 mains and some bigger pilots. Are the needles necessary also now or should I try stock stuff for starters. I am at 4400 feet and usually ride to 9500 feet. What is your elevation?
Best Regards

I run 40/140 jets in my 1075 engine. If you have stock exhaust the 137.5 might work. Roy

My elevation is around 500 ft. So you are much higher and may have to go down on main jet size. The needle is not necesary, however, keep in mind the needle is part of another circuit just like changing pilot or mains. I am currently still working it, but IMO the stock needle should be replaced with an adjustable one. Finding the best one is part of jetting just like finding the right pilot and main.

Thought I would give you an update below directly:
Updating my setup. It runs so good with this setup and needle change I cant hardly stand it.
air filters K&N RU-0984 (pods)
Pilots 40 1.5 turns out
Mains 135 (cylinders 2 and 3)
Mains 132.5 (cylinders 1 and 4)
Needles 5ix11 set on clip 2 from the top (these are readily available and have 5 clip positions)
elevation 500 ft.
getting the carbs synced is no minor task but well worth spending time to get it right. FYI I worked down from a rich condition on Pilots (started at 45) and Mains (started at 140) and worked the stutter out of the WOT.
The yamaha 5ix11 needles IMO are definitely the ticket. Started on clip 3 from top and moved to 2 from the top. This needle is very close to the 5GX29 a 5 clip adjustable needle used in the KZ1100-A non-US models. The 5ix11 is readily available where the 5GX29 is not.
I post this info in case it helps someone else. My bike is the 83 KZ1100 Spectre with the original carbs. I will take it to the dyno soon to determine how close it is.
