Do I need new Diaphragms?

The bike is running good. Idling good, and moves pretty good too.

When I disassembled the carbs...the diaphragms were stretched and curled. I was able to clean them off, and lay them in properly and button them back up.

If there are no holes or tears, do I really need to replace the diaphragms?
Will it give better power with new ones?

Thanks in advance...first bike with the cv style carbs.

As long as there are no holes and they fit then you should be good

I guess they can dry out and shrink get stiff etc. Like JR said, first clue is if they fit. Soft, and no holes. If they are stiff it would affect the way they get lifted by vacuum signal. Always make sure they are indexed correctly. You probably saw the small ear on one side that has a notch to go into. This puts the signal hole on the bottom, facing the front/ motor side.
These big motors haul some but don't they? :P

There are no holes or tears, but they are a bit....well, stretched out. They were almost too big for the carb.

What happens if the ear is not in the right spot? (if they are rotated)?

The hole on the bottom of the slide valve must face forward towards engine side. If not the signal will be less to lift it, being lean and most likely a hesitation.

Okay, I have to double check how they are oriented.

You are correct...these big fours are quick! Not as fast as a modern 1000 rocket, but not bad at all.

The edges are so stretched out on mine that I am not sure I can get them to "seat" as nice as yours. Almost as if they were too big.

The edges themselves were curling inward too.

Roy's tip about using a dab of grease is a great one. If you can get them seated and fit in the groove the top will hold them down.
Fit is important :)
