kz1000 ltd carbs and jetting
01 Jun 2011 01:59
like to start out by saying hey! this forum rocks and there is tons of great info here. I've done alot of searching. heres my dilemma, I've got a 1978 kz1000 ltd that had carb issues when I bought it. the original carbs that were on it came with the bike, but the bike had a different set on it and didnt run good. so I looked into rebuilding the original carbs and it turns out the mix screws were broke off and one body is drilled out larger than the original mix screw hole. the only difference I see between the original carbs and the other are the mix screw locations. the jetting of the original carbs is way different than the others. jetting as follows. bottom mix screw, 115 main, 17.5 pilot, 0-3 needle jet, 5cn7 needles clipped in the fourth from the top. Now I know there is no set up that works perfect in every bike, but does this sound right for a otherwise stock bike? the other carbs had side mix screws, 102.5 mains, 15 pilot, 0-6 needle jet, 5dl31 needles two down from the top. I also have a set of 105 mains and 17 pilots. I am thinking of swapping all the parts into the replacement bodies. What do you think? Thanks

where are you located?
second set of numbers sounds more in ballpark for stock motor to me,but everything depends on your location

I believe the bottom mix screw is for adjusting gas. If the screw is in front of the carb body,it adjusts gas. On back it adjusts air. Roy

I'm no jetting guru, but I have a strong understanding of basic jetting to get a bike's jetting running really good on the street. Your peticular case is very difficult to answer espacially where the carbs have the mixture screw holes hacked. Off the top of my head your jetting sounds somewhat close. Every jetting demand is different, air temps, humidity , altitude, mods compression. All play a role in final jetting. We might be able to help better if you post up a detailed description of how the engine is behaving from cold starting, to hot idle, and throughout the rpm range.

also noticed the bike came with a k&n replacement filter, but I dont know if that would require such a jump in jetting.

According to Wiredgeorge the stock jetting for a stock late '78 1000 LTD is 102.5 mains, 15 pilots, I think 0-3 needle jets and for sure 5cn7 needles on the 4th clip position. The late 78's were jetted very lean from the factory for smog issues. I'm currently running 105 mains and otherwise stock jetting. My bike runs great!
