Fuel Leak!!!
20 May 2011 11:46
My bike has been leaking fuel from the carb overflow lines. I believe it is leaking from all of them but mostly the rightmost carburetor. The previous owner rejetted the carbs for the kerker exhaust and thinks that the leak is a result of him monkeying around in there. Any ideas of what could cause that before i go tearing these carbs apart and replacing all the gaskets/orings? Also the PO said he thought it was only leaking the gas that was left in the carbs after the bike is parked, but its been sitting for about 2 weeks with the gas off and still seems to be dripping. Do i have a bad petcock?

Float levels incorrectly set, or the float valve/ needle and seat is not sealing. Dirt can be a cause of that. Does it have a good in-line fuel filter? If not install one, and most likely new line. Setting the floats correctly will assure that any other carb adjustments will be even. Follow the Clear Tube Fuel Height Check in your Manual. Or search here on KZR, member patton has a tutorial.

+1 I would start by cleaning the float valves (this can be done without removing the carbs). Use Q-Tip and carb cleaner; use nothing abrasive. While the bowls are off check to ensure the PO didn't damage the overflow tubes inside the bowls. Ed

I took a look and there is an in line fuel filter. I'm thinking motorhead might be right that the float valve is not sealing. I seem to recall the PO saying he thought something was bent in there (oh great). I will probably pull the carbs off regardless and clean them all out cause dirt is no reason for anything to break, fix/replace anything that's messed up and then replace the fuel line and filter with new ones when i reinstall the carbs. Thanks for the tips ill post again after i get some wrench time to take a look at them

before you do anything crazy check to see if the screws are tight on the float bowl because if they are loose it will leak fuel.
