Pods sound like ass IMO. The engine sounds like a big water bong unless you are 1/2 throttle or more. I switched back from pods to the stock airbox on my Z1 and was never happier. As far as having more pull? Throw on a 16t front sprocket.

This very question is asked probably a million times on virtually every motorcycle forum "pods vs. airbox. Generally speaking for every 1 person that has achieved TRUE sucess with pods on a street driven application, there is 20 (I killed my low to midrange power) horror stories. I 100% agree with others that CV type carbs and pods do NOT work well together "out of the box" on the street. The key term here is "STREET". You can get pods to work effectively, but you better seek the proffesional services of an experienced tuner with a dyno. Then if the ambient air temps deviate say more than 20 degrees from which you initially had your tuning performed, now you engine is incorrectly jetted anyways. I tried podding a older GS750E years ago and what a friggin PIA nightmare to jet, NEVER got the bike to run decent, when I did i lost about 6 mpg ! So just do yourself a HUGE favor....keep your airbox, and add a richer pilot jet, and shim the stock needles if you have OEM jetting and if you have a pipe. Just ride and be happy on the street

I guess I'm 50/50 on this subject. True that the japs designed the bikes to run efficient and very well with the stock airbox, no if ands or buts about it. But for those individuals who desire a different "look" then pods are a viable alternative.
With that said, there is a great amount of "tinkering" that needs to be done when running pods with or without pipe changes. I put pods on my 84 nighthawk 700 and ran 4 into 2 home made pipes with no baffles and it ran like crappolla. I had to run bigger main and pilot jets and spent a good deal of time tweeking the fuel mixture screws and then syncin the carbs. I never put it on a dyno so I'm pretty sure it could be off slightly but after running plug chops and riding the bike for a few months I have been able to tweek the carbs for pretty good performance. I will say that my gas milage isn't the best but I didn't build the bike for that reason. I built it for me and what I like.
So, I guess it depends on individual tastes, and how much "tinkering and tweekin" a person wants to do to obtain something that looks and or performs differently. I like my bikes loud so I prefer to change things to suit me and for me that means jetting the carbs and tinkering.
