Carburetor Question
13 May 2011 12:52
Some guys I hang out with are taking a 81 KZ1000j to Bonneville this summer and they have appointed me Carb Guru. Mostly because I cleaned and rebuilt the carbs for my bike, which is the closest to the 1000. Anywho, we have two sets of carbs, one is the stock cv set, and the other is a set of a 73 Z1. We have gotten some advice saying to run the Z1 carbs as they are less complicated. There has been some controversy because they are smaller than the stockers. What are your opinions on which set to run? I imagine the Z1 carbs will need to be re-jetted, any suggestions on what size? The current plan is to run pods and possibly open exhaust. I am not sure the elevation at Bonneville, but I here it's up there so that should probably be counted for. Thanks in advance.

I would say run the stock BS34's, they are larger and since the bike will be at full throttle most of time you will need the largest carb.

+1
For top end the bigger carb would be best. Jet it up, some velocity stacks would give it more on top. Any cam change for more upper power, or head/ compression work? This horsepower gain will help a lot with tall gears and the speed against the wind etc. I think some extra rake would help the stability at speed, maybe a steering damper. Some guys here have done those speed runs and will probably chime in with suggestions.

No engine work this year. The guys are just want to see how fast it will go. I believe steering dampeners are required so there will definitely be one. This bike sat outside at the fence shop we hang out at for about five years. So velocity stacks are what we should run? any idea where to get a set?

personally I think you would make a better time with the properly synched 28's.I've tried both.
just my 2 cents.20/120 ,maybe fatten up the main a bit, make sure she goes to 10,000
