what's float height for a kz550 A2? me=no manual!
12 May 2011 15:31
I searched on the web, I searched our KZR forum on 'kz550 float height'
I searched the filebase on KZR for this info, no luck,
so I have to ask.....
what's the float height for a 1981 Kz550A2? I suspect the 1980 Kz550A1 would have the same float height.
*Really* need the float height here. I realize the fuel level's important, if you know that, cool, but I really want to know the manual's float height, anyone know?

I've never seen an actual float-height spec for the TK-22 carbs (used on kz550 A,C,D 80-82). It's always specified as fuel level.
The float pushes on the needle valve which has a spring-loaded pin, so the float heights may all be different even though the fuel levels are the same height, so a float height number would be too im-precise.
You should look at the fuel-level stains on the floats to guess where the float sits in the fuel, then use this diagram. The carb body has a lip that hangs down over the seal surface. The bottom of that lip is what you measure from when using a fuel level sight tube.

Also, there is a manual in my signature, if you want to check.

No problem.
The biggest safetly issue to be aware of on the 550's is that the valve cover is part of the valve train so you must release the cam chain tension before botling down the valve cover.
The older/bigger KZ's use idler sprockets, but the 550 uses slide-guides only.
Here's some kz/gpz camshaft details for the 550's:
