Dumb question about TK22's

How are the overflow tubes supposed to be routed?

I see the grommet they go through but where do they go from there?

If I cut them short they will dump onto the foot pegs, if i run them long it looks like i'll have raw gas dripping on hot exhaust pipes which sounds like a quick way to burn the bike to the ground.

Any pics would help greatly, the one in the Clymer's manual stinks!

Bike's an '82 KZ550 A3

Thanks,

A photo would help. The TK 22's on my 81 550 had the bowl drains off to the right side of the frame/swing arm point. The rubber tubes ended just below the exhaust pipes. That is how they came when I bought the bike new.

Here's oem carb overflow drain hose routing on KZ900.
Hoses exit below level of exhaust underneath bike.

Yup, for better or for worse, that's how they go. They will empty onto the exhaust pipe. If you keep the tubes long enough to pass the exhaust, the exhaust will just melt them. Mine end about 1/4" before they hit the pipe.

The single oem rubber drain hose collector is shaped like this (but with a longer mid-section):

A second collector may be fitted (or perhaps a tie wrap or whatever) to hold the drain hoses in a position where they don't discharge onto the exhaust, at least on the large fours with Kerker or V&H 4>1 exhaust systems.

Here's my KZ900-B1 LTD with drain hoses and battery vent hose collected and held near the unused center stand bolt hole. The battery vent tube actually runs through the bolt hole with exit pointed away from the exhaust. Z1 with 4>1 V&H is fitted the same with drain hoses in position whereby discharge won't drip onto the exhaust.

Success with this manner of drain hose routing likely depends on curvature of the particular exhaust system as it passes underneath the bike.

Good Fortune! :)
