08 May 2011 19:43
Good afternoon yall I've been trying to get my 1984 kz700 a1 running and riding last night i finally got it to start and run which was awesome took it for a ride this morning acceeleration through 1st great 2nd sucks no mid or top end third even worse and dont bother trying to hit fourth i estimate my top speed around 35-45 mph (keep in mind i have no speedo so i dont know for sure. My buddy tells me the accelerator pumps are bad and honestly i dont know what else it can be. Any ideas and source for these if it is the case would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hello, donaldderby, and WELCOME to KZr!
Lack of acceleration, imo, isn't related to the carb accelerator pump.
Am thinking perhaps fuel starvation, possibly from obstructed vent in fuel cap.
Would test run with fuel cap ajar.
Fuel starvation may also result from crud inside the fuel tank, blocked petcock pic-up tubes (screens), crud inside petcock, dirty in-line fuel filter, etc.
If this bike is fitted with a mechanical advancer, the reported problem might also result from a frozen advancer unit. Which may need cleaning and lubing. And would use strobe-type timing light to watch advancer move quickly back and forth as rpm is varied by blipping the throttle.
Good Fortune!

Have you cleaned the carbs? Dirty carbs will cause the symptoms you describe. Ed

i have cleaned the carbs, tonight will be the forth time. the fuel tank is full of crap i got most out but being this is the fourth time ive replaced the inline filter as well due to being clogged there is still a bunch in there im going to take apart the petcock again tonight and powerwash out the inside of the tank. I was told miriatic acid works good for getting everything out of the tanks is this the case or is there a safer method thanks again for all the help. Also is there a service manual availible for these bikes im told the 80-85 ltd manual will work if this is true please let me know.

put a log chain or a bunch of nuts and bolts in the gas tank with some gas and shake the piss out of it. then rinse it a couple times with gas. it knocks the rust off the walls of the tank. not all of it but most of it. your inline fuel filter should do the rest.

Hey guys... one thing that worries me about his initial write up is that he says he has great acceleration in 1st gear. Then as he runs throught the other gears the acceleration is gone. That doesn't sound like a carb issue to me at all, first thing that came to mind is the clutch is slipping in the other gears besides 1st. Thoughts?

Ok all got all the rust out and i mean all the rust using muric acid and then rinsing the piss out of it. i put the inline filter on and new fuel line (the kawisaki shit felt like vacum line to me) i takes a few to get it started but ran great at full choke, crappy with mid choke, and would do nothing but idle with no choke. This is happening no matter warm or cool and the bike seems to not to like to start without a jump despite the brand new battery. I know my starter is going as it doesnt like to kick most of the time. I am interested in adjuster though but despite the directions on the site i cant place where on the motor said adjuster is, so if anyone could explain in better details preferably with good pics it would help. Thanks all and Semer Fi Gunny.

however yes all four cylinders fire when running as tested using the spray test(water sprayed on the individual header pipes)

ok after going through the bike end to end i found the blue with red stripe wire from my ignition to be burnt this helped the idle a bit but nothing else i have enclosed a pic of my rotor with cyl 1 at tdc to ensure it looks right and is spot on. Thanks again
