1981 650 will not idle without choke
04 May 2011 18:47
I finally got to working on my 650 again, and I remember now why its so frustrating. I have got it to run with the choke full on. If I slowly bring the choke down, it will continue running, until I get to about half on the choke. It acts like its getting no fuel, and just dies. I have messed with the fuel/air adjustment screws, but no avail. I do need a petcock rebuild kit, as it is leaking pretty badly, but I dont think that would cause it to not run well. I could be wrong thought.
This is a stock 650, stock exhaust, stock airbox, etc.
I can keep it running with no choke if i constantly give it throttle, but it wants to die anywhere under 2800 rpm..

Sounds like the carbs may need a good cleaning. Ed

This will be the third time that they will be torn apart for cleaning. Each carb has a new carb kit in it also. It wouldnt bother me so much if not for the airbox boots being such a pain to take off and on.

Have you checked to see if the intake manifolds are properly sealed to the cylinder head?
That will cause a lean condition that can keep you from having a good idle. Spray a little wd40 between each carb and the head, if the idle speed increase then you have a leak that nneds to be sealed up.

If so & when you did, how bad were the carburetors? Gummed up n stuff?
The carb body orifices may still be plugged.
Initial mechanical synchronization of the throttle slide? ~0.8-1.0mm gap
Air screws set to ~1.5-2.0 turns out from seated?
Service fuel level check? 3.0mm +/- 1mm below the carb body.
Are the airbox ducts hard? If so, try spraying carb spray or something to check for any vacuum leaks. A change in rpms will indicate a leak. If so, then you may be sh!t out of luck - the 81 CSR ducts are NLA and no other model has the same ducts.
Good air filter installed?
Go ahead & do a compression check. Engine warm, spark plugs removed, tester installed into one spark plug hole, WOT, crank the engine w the starter button. While the plugs are out, take a look at them to see if there are any clues.
Check to make sure all 4 exhaust pipes are warming up. Start the cold engine, then pat them immediately to see if they're warming up evenly. DON"T BURN YOUR HAND. Only pat them at first to check to make sure all 4 cylinders are firing. Don't touch the hot pipes once they get beyond warm. You can use a spray bottle to mist them - after the engine is warmed up, the mist should sizzle. If you suspect anything amiss, go ahead & redo the spark plug wire connections. They become poor from oxidation over time. The plug wires unscrew from the coils: unscrew the ribbed compression boots, then unscrew the wires. If there's a lot of the white crusty stuff, nip off the ends of the wires a tad... not too much though.
Go ahead & get a K&L petcock rebuild kit from Z1Enterprises.com.
Install an in-line fuel filter. I like the clear 3" units from Z1.
I actually had my father in law rebuild the carbs for me the second time around, I gave him the carb kits, and he did the rest. He said he let them soak overnight in carb cleaner. He didnt mention anything about bench syncing them, or float bowl adjustment. I will take the carbs off and re-check/clean everything, bench sync them, and do the float bowl test. While thats going down, ill also check all the spark plugs, and connections.
I have an inline fuel filter installed new today, so thats no worry, its just the petcock rebuild kit i need.
Thanks for the advice man!

One other thought (forgive me if this sounds stupid) are you letting it warm up before trying to shut down the choke? These bikes are cold blooded, and some take up to 5 minutes or so to warm up before the choke can be shut off. Ed
