Air restriction question Kz 650 1978
03 May 2011 09:33
I bought a kz650 last night. No air box on this bike. Guy I got it from ordered new filters to mount on the carbs. He said they were stock air restriction. I'm going to put those on but my question is this :
I ran the bike and it had no power at the low end. Almost hard to take off. Once it got on to it it picked up fine. Almost anyway. But I even ran it with choke on and didn't seem to help the issue of being able to take off. I would have thought choking it would hav been the same as running it with air box on it am I wrong. This bike has been sitting since 92. 8000 miles on it. Do you think the air restriction is still problem or I have another I'm going to bump in to once I put new filters on. Also battery is shot. Got a new one. I know some bikes require a good battery and some don't really. Wouldn't have thought this old bike would require it.

A new battery, then disassemble and thoroughly clean those carbs, be prepared to re-jet for those POD filters. Add an Inline filter to the fuel line, inspect those carb holders real good, could be cracked and if not could soon be without the support from the rear airbox connection. Clean the tank, fresh fuel, clean and lube the Ignition advancer, and check to see you get close to battery voltage at your coils. If not be prepared to clean all your electrical connection, A good Idea anyway on an old bike. Then you might get it too run a bit before following through with the rest, re-jetting, oil change, valve adjust, compression test, tires/ brakes, check lube all cables, etc.
Welcome to KZR and have fun, but if you haven't already get a service manual with the procedures and spec's.

I can tell you, if it was mine I would clean the carbs and put a stock airbox on instead of spending hours on end trying to figure out if poor running is caused by pods, incorrect pod jetting, or something unrelated to the carbs. Here's an airbox if you decide to take the easy way out......
