Would you coat a perfectly good gas tank?

I was doing a few odds and ends on my 650 getting it ready for the riding season. I had to rebuild my fuel petcock, so when the tank was drained down I was looking around inside it. I looks almost new inside with just a small bit of rust down along the seams. I was debating getting a coating kit like POR-15 etc. It dosen't need the coating, and it is very clean inside. I was wondering how many of you guys would coat a perfectly good gas tank?

I had a radiator shop coat the thak on my 1300, but since this one has a fresh paint job on it (less than two years old), I would do it myself. One of the reasons I am relucant to do it now IS that I don't want to risk messing up the paint. Any opinons?
If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

As long as you keep FRESH fuel in it, especially during storage, rust won't have a chance to form.
And the small amount you stated that you saw along the seams won't "grow" and cause problems.

In this case, if it aint broke....;)

Would not coat tank interior.

If rusty inside, would de-rust it (using any of the several good rust removal methods), and not coat tank interior unless necessary to seal pin-hole leaks in the tank.

Where coating is necessary to seal pin-hole leaks, imo the radiator shop boil and seal is the best option.

Good Fortune! :)

I'm in the, if it ain't broke don't fix it camp as well. I have a bike that the previous owner lined the tank, and didn't do the best job. Little bits of the liner will show up in the fuel filter from time to time.

Ran into a tank on an outboard motor where that happend. Sucks because other than replacing the tank there isn't a whole lot you can do.

Sounds like a resounding NO from everyone. I will forget I though about it. I am so used to having to flush and coat tanks, guess I was just curious about the one on my 650. The tank I had done last fall for my 1300 was one of the worst I have ever seen. It wasn't rusted through anywhere, infact there wasn't much rust at all(guess it was bad ina few spots). But the varnish was like 1" thick in the bottom and the consistency of hard candy. My friend at the radiator shop had to boil and rinse the tank several times. I was looking at the tank the other day wondered if it wouldn't hurt to do it on the 650. Well I won't wonder any more.

Thanks.

NO!

Coating is a last resort for a total pos tank. My old zuki was pretty rusty. I washed it out with acetone and ball bearings, added a fuel filter and never had a minutes trouble.
