A real easy to tell if there smoothbores is pull the slides open and stick your finger in the carbs and feel for the casting in the roof of the bores making them "smoothbores". These carps work on any Kawi 650 and up to about 1300.

Yes they were a status thing in the 70's most chopper bobber Kaw 900's and 750 SOHC Hondas had them on.
Then they got into the high performance thing, dragbike etc.

I know old guys that have them sitting on their garage shelves, but won't give em up at any price, just cause their stubborn!
