Throttle cables
10 Apr 2011 14:56
I pulled my C2 out of the garage and took it for its first spring run. Ran great. It was my first bike, purchased last summer. Didn't know anything about bikes but I've been working on a project B1 over the winter to learn. Took a look at the C2's carbs and noticed the throttle return cable was very slack and appears to be broken. Throttle cable is fine and looks new so I'm assuming it was replaced sometime before I purchased the bike. Throttle response is great.
So my questions are, If the carb spring snaps the throttle slides shut, then what is the purpose of the return cable? Am I in any danger of running the bike this way until I order up a new one?
And last question. Even though they have different part numbers 54012-140, and 54012-141, they appear to be the same cable? Are they interchangeable?

what is the purpose of the return cable? Am I in any danger of running the bike this way until I order up a new one? --- allows manual throttle closure in event of a broken carb return spring or other malfunction.
When running without the return cable, would suggest being well aware of location and instinctive use of the emergency kill switch.
Wasn't all that long ago when all motorcycles had only one throttle cable and a comparatively wimpy internal carb return spring.
Even though they have different part numbers 54012-140, and 54012-141, they appear to be the same cable? Are they interchangeable? --- might be interchangeable, but often there's a slight difference in the bend of the metal tube that fits into the handlebar throttle assembly.
Good Fortune!

The new motion pro throttle cables I just put on my B2 are the same number. And I ran mine all last year without a return cable, but like Patton says, know where the kill switch is just in case you need it.

you can tune that single cable to by taking some slack into the throttle side turn buckle then raising the threads on the carburetor tower side( lock the nuts so there is just enough thread sticking out to still lock the bottom nut.....
then adjust the throttle turnbuckle until there is a smidge of play in the throttle.....
it will snap quick and clean and if you fiddle with it some you can get it to be supper crisp and snappy...more so than if it was running two......
it is kind of a poor mans 1/4 turn racer set up.....it is really nice when you get it right....
you do not need the extra push cable...but on a long ride you may want an extra cable with you...in case the one breaks
one of the first things i do when i get a new to me kz....is set up the quick snap single cable deal, and toss the extra cable in the tool box
