who can identify what this thing is?

Hi all,
I have carbs that run great. That being said, I am missing the three-screw cover shown in this pic. What the heck is that thing? Does it really need a cover?

I could certainly be wrong as it is hard to tell just which carbs the pic is of, but I think that is part of an Accelerator pump. Some sets have the place for one but do not have the pump installed. If your set is not making use of one then no it is not needed. Having said all of that, I am sure others will chime in with more info.

First time I have seen that cover.
Usually not used,left blank,unmachined.
The acc. pump is the cover with 4 screws.

It's part of the accelerator pump. The 79 LTD 1000's have that on them. As was mentioned, not all models with the pump have that extra cover. I think the 80 LTD model came without it.I forget it's exact function but I will check the manual today. It's a check valve for the pump as I recall.
There's a fuel passage that will either be drilled or not. If yours had the drilled passage and the cover was missing, fuel would be running out of the hole.

Awesome, thanks Larry. I guess the carbs currently on my 1979 KZ650D2-SR did not need that cover. There is a plate there, and no sign of a diaphragm.
Separately, none of the 650cc models show an accelerator pump at all. I am starting to wonder if I may have carbs non-original to my model.

Starting in mid to late 78 many / most of the kz650s sold in the US had accelerator pumps. IIRC they were added to meet EPA requirements.

thanks. So, I have the correct carbs I think, and the accelerator pump does not have a replaceable diaphragm there. great insight.
Mine is machined for that cover though, there are screw holes.

Some guys disconnect the actuating rod from the diaphragm lever, doing away with the accelerator pump. My KZ 650 E 1 has a working one on it. Bob

Here is a pic from a B model parts list showing the pump. It does show both of the parts in question, but as was said not all of the carbs made use of both.

Right, I don't see the hole for the pin that's part of the diaphragm to go into.
I would leave the pump hooked up and not mess with it's adjustment. That was actually a nice feature to have IMO.
