Hi,
Just joined up, I have a KZ1100 that I love, problem is when I start the bike with choke on it revs very high, extremely high, bike idles fine with choke off, any suggestions?

Thanks for reply!

Anyone? anyone ever have this problem? with choke on the runs at 6-7k rpm, with choke off it idles fine at 1000 rpm.

My 82 KZ1000 does same thing.I never really pay much attention to it as I take it off full choke and go to 1/2 choke after 10-15 seconds.I dont really think its a problem-just the nature of these cold-blooded bikes.Lol.bj

Hello, copycat, and WELCOME to KZr! :cheer:

This might not help too much with regard to the carbs at hand, which am guessing to be CV (constant vacuum) carbs.

But with the manual slide Mikunis, I constantly monitor the rpm after cold starting with choke applied.

After a moment or so on full choke the rpm will rise excessively high unless the choke is gradually reduced.

I never walk away from the freshly cold cranked bike while it's still on choke. As it would rather quickly race up to probably 6000 plus rpm.

Imo the better initial warm-up exercise is to promptly and progressively minimize the choke while using slight throttle to keep the rpm up just enough to prevent the engine from stalling.

Someone having more experience with your exact carbs should be along soon --- such as bj did while I was typing this. :cheer:

Good Fortune! :)

thanks for the replies, from what I understand the choke on these carbs is really not a conventional choke setup, rather just increased fuel flow setup, I was just wondering if there is an adjustment for the choke alone.

That's correct, and it's often described as an "enrichener circuit."

Your carbs are in fact CV type carbs with a 3 position enrichener rod.

Positions: Full choke/enrich, half choke/enrich, closed.

The bike should only rev to about 3500 +/- 500 rpm when starting on full choke, then drop after a few seconds, at which point you change to half choke and engine begins to warm with rpm rising back up to 3500 +/- 500 rpm slowly. After rpm has reached this point again on half choke, closing choke completely can be done.

There are some changes you can make to the carbs to remedy this issue, but the first I would recommend (and will deffinately fix it), is to check/raise the fuel levels in the bowls slightly (raise approx 2-3mm if below spec). If at spec, try raising to the highest spec, or above slightly, and this will help greatly.

Best of luck.

Thanks again for the suggestions, I pulled them back off the bike and will double check them for cleanliness as well as the float levels. I must say I think the fact that kaw painted these carbs was a dumb idea. ;)
