750 twin pita
19 Feb 2011 21:47
I recently aquired a 79 750b twin. dual mikuni vacuum slide style carbs. the bike ran before but i had to repair a hole in the sidecover to get it to run again. anyways the bike has pod filters and i have read on here about them making the engine run lean. well im thinking that is my problem as i have cleaned the carbs twice and get the same results every time. will only run on choke and will not rise above 1800 rpm's or else, it will die. im thinking i have a jetting problem on my hands then again the bike has been sitting for 3 years before yesterday. The previous owner (my dad) said that the pod filters were on it when he got it and it ran fine so im kinda cunfused here any help would be greatly apreciated

Sounds to me like it's not getting enough fuel to the carbs.
Remove the petcock and clean the screen and tank, it may be getting blocked there. Be sure and check the fuel input on the carbs also, I've seen itt totally plugged right before it gets to the fuel bowl.
I'm assuming you set the float levels correctly?

I havent messed with the float levels at all, and the petcock is free flowing on both sides and both carbs have been cleaned except for the choke. i didnt remove the three screws on there but i guess i will this time. i did remove the bowls and caps and clean and blew everything out with compressed air.

Sounds like your pilot jet system is clogged. It is contained in the bowl, you could try soaking it and then spritz it severely with carb spray.
If that bike sat three years with gas in the carbs, the gas would have solidified to brown varnish.

Just for the record I also have a 79 KZ750 twin with pods, no problem the bike runs well. I just recently did the carbs, cleaned and replaced the jets, stock jets. Hope this helps.

Yea that helps, i got it (rideable) still acts up at 0-1/4 throttle with the choke off, but will idle perfectly with the choke on. i think i read on here somewhere which jet works during that point in the throttle

750deuce, that would be the pilot jet (the one in the float bowl)
you might be able to remove the bowls without removing the carb rack.
Good luck

Another view of the jet.
the holes in the sides of the jet need to be clear (click on picture to enlarge).
Good luck
