Has anybody had their carbs sonic cleaned? I am thinking of getting them sonic cleaned, but I really dont know how good they clean, and if it is worth it? Thanks,Tony.
I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

When i bought my 300 dollar ebay find, my carbs were terrible, I heard of someone using Pinesol to clean carbs, I thought they were on crack so I started looking around on google and found a lot of people doing it. So i decided to try it on a lawnmower I was working on and it worked good. I recommend trying to use pinesol, It doesnt hurt the plastic parts or rubber parts. You just have to soak them for about 24 hours and then scrub them with an old tooth brush. It worked pretty good. it wouldnt hurt to try that.

Whatever method you end up using to clean your carbs (ultrasonic is fine), you must verify the flow before re-assembly.

Use a spray can cleaner like carb cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure to completely dissasemble the carburetors, so that there are no rubber parts left inside. Use the little straw and spray up into the passages on the botton of the carb while looking down the carb bore (w/safety glasses of course). You should see the cleaner squirt nice and cleanly through all the small holes into the carb bore. Do this for all your carbs and compare. The spray should all look similar.

This way when you re-assemble everything and there is gas in the bowls, you KNOW that fuel is moving through the small passages and getting to the engine the way it is supposed to.

I've had friends with professionally cleaned carbs that look shiney and new on the outside, still have clogged passage ways internally.

Trust, but VERIFY!

I've had a half dozen or so sets ultrasonically cleaned. It works excellent, BUT remove all the jets first. The first two sets that I had done I left the jets in and when they came back the pilots were still clogged. I started sending them to the cleaners minus jets and needle valves after that, and I've had great results since.

I clean the jets with paintbrush cleaner.
