carburettor jetting
09 Feb 2011 03:32
Hey all, I am new to this site and I have a few jetting questions. I have a 1979 Kz650 B3 with the vm24ss carbs with the accelerator pump. The carbs are off the bike right now, and I would like to replace the gaskets, O rings, and all of the jets, as the previous owner had some crazy stuff in there. The bike is stock other than a 4 into 1 exhaust. What size jets should I be using, and what part numbers are they?
What it looks like to me, although I could be totally wrong, is that I need a 100 main and a 15 pilot. Is this correct, and where can I find them that fit in my carbs?
Also, what is the correct jet needle and where can I get that?
Thanks for any responces, Cincykz.

This doesn't answer the carb questions
, but has some other specs, as found under Filebase in KZ Information (see green ribbon toward top of screen).

Gaskets for top covers and float bowls may often be re-used many times. And the o-rings may also remain serviceable.
Good Fortune!

Thanks for the quick replies, much appreciated. I've been using Z1 so far, and they have been great. I'm gonna go pull those carbs apart, wish me luck.

Is there anywhere I can get replacement air screws for my carbs? I've been searching for them and can't find any. The air screw on my #4 is a mismatch for the rest of them, it has a hex head and the point doesn't look the very same.

I think this kit should work for your bike.
www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=42
Some of the more experianced members might want to chime in if I'm wrong. Conatins everything you need, o-rings, gaskets, jets etc.
You might also want to email Z1 and see if they other the air screw by itself. If you want to salvage the jets and screws from the bike, you can order the top and bottom gaskets from Z1 and I used this o-ring kit from cycleorings

Hi Cincy, I have a KZ 650 1980 E1 with the same carbs. I also have pods and a 4 into 1 exhaust. I believe the carbs came with 15 idle jets and 95 mains. I had to put 17.5 idle and should put 112.5 mains, with the metering rods all the way up(rich). I put 115s in and it runs good, but is a tad rich. I do plan to drop to 112.5s. The o'rings I got from the Harbor Freight Nitril O'rings they sell for about $10.00. Just buy the jets and gaskets and when you think you have all the passages clear, do it again. Last but not least, install a fuel filter before hooking everything back together. All parts should be kept separate in 4 different containers, so they go back to the same carb. If the rubber is good on the accelerator pump, reuse or or Z1 has a rebuild kit. Bob

OK - just some advise:
MAKE SURE that you remove every part of the carb as many have small rubber o-rings that the carb cleaner will kill. Carb cleaner destroys rubber, make sure you completely dissasemble everything!
Most people use a good aresol can type carb cleaner. Use the small straw to put up inside the carb pilot jet hole after removing the pilot jet, and spray through the carb pilot system. Put on some safety glasses and look down the carb bore on the engine side. While spraying, you should see the carb cleaner coming through all the small holes in the carb bore. Not the big on in the middle, thats for the main jet/needle. The small 1/32inch holes. Compare the spray to all the other carbs using the same process, and this will ensure that your idle/cruise systems are clean and efficient.
Use the straw to spray through each of the jets as well, and make sure you can see they are clean inside when held up to a light.
This also prevents having to re-open the carbs later, from guessing they are not clean enough. Cause you will know they are clean and flowing.
We've had guys here open carbs up many times, cleaning and cleaning them, but never verifying actual flow.
Do-it. Save yourself some time and frustration.
Peace.

Thanks for the info, I'll be careful and get all of the passages clean. Gotta get this thing done while there's still snow on the ground...

taking that same carb spray tube and taping it real good to a compressor blower tip.. is also a great thing to do after spraying..
there is a diagram somewhere of where u spray in multiple 3 hole senarios...
cover 1 hole.. spay into 2.. come out of 3. then u change things up..
