dumb question about feul tank removal
29 Jan 2011 19:34
filled up my tank to the tippy top today. then my ride was cut short by an unforseen problem. is there a way to remove the tank without draining it. if i try to clamp the lines am i asking for trouble and later having to drain it to replace the lines later?

First of all, what type of bike are we talking about? I'm gonna guess that it's a KZ. In which case, you should be able to remove the tank by turning the petcock to off, and disconnecting the fuel line at the petcock. You will spill a small amount of fuel from the line, but the tank will not drain if your petcock isn't leaking. On later KZ's with the vacuum petcock, they should shut theirself off, if the petcock is working properly. If you have a vacuum petcock, just make sure it is set to the run position. This is the position that requires the vacuum from the motor to open the petcock. Keep in mind that the fuel can spill out from the cap even when it is closed. There is a vent in the cap that will leak if the tank is inverted. Keep it upright until it is re-installed. If your petcock leaks then you'll need to drain it.

Your bike has a vacuum actuated petcock.
ON & RES act as the off position when the motorcycle is not running.
When the bike is running and it's set to ON or RES, engine vacuum pulls open a spring loaded diaphragm in the petcock to allow fuel to flow by gravity. When the engine is not running, the diaphragm returns to the closed position, stopping the flow of fuel (again, when it's set to ON or RES).
PRI bypasses the diaphragm to allow fuel to flow - engine on or engine off.

It's easy to put information about bike year and model, etc. in your "signature" where it will automatically appear in posted messages.
When done, the signature information appears in all posts, past and future. And may be changed as often as desired.
Here's how to do it:

Good Fortune!
