carb differences

Throughout this site I have read about this carb and that carb. What are the differences? And not only stock KZ carbs but BS34's and things like that. Different Mukini and Keh carbs. I know there are many but Im speaking of the ones commonly used on these KZ builds. And lets not forget about Lectrons

Why. I know they are for racing. But I would like to know all I can about them and others. Just in case I decide to go racing

There are basically two families of carbs; the mechanical carbs (VM26, 28, 29 and such) and the constant velocity carbs (BS34 and such).

On the mechanical carbs, the throttle cable operates directly on the slide (piston), raising or lowering the jet needle, thus affecting the fuel flow. This system creates variable velocity. When the throttle is whacked open, velocity in the carb drops until engine speed catches up. Likewise, when the throttle is chopped, velocity screams until rpm comes down.

On constant velocity (cv) carbs, the throttle cable is connected to throttle plates. When the throttle is opened, the slide (piston) rises as increased velocity pushes it up, maintaining a constant velocity across the main jet. Likewise, when the throttle is chopped, the plate closes, but the slide drops more slowly as engine speed decreases, thus maintaining relatively constant velocity once again.

Aside from this, the differences are relatively minor and nearly all (perhaps all) have been discussed in a bazillion threads. Let the search box be ur friend.

If you are headed for the 1320, then maybe they will be the shnit for you. Everybody I have talked to says they perform well on the dragstrip, but a a huge pain to set up and keep set up, especially due to the separate throttle cable for each carb.

(Gently dissing Lectrons here.)
